We need to ensure that we have captured the complete record. It\u2019s what you don\u2019t see with the naked eye that is crucial to interpretation. Simple software tools will separate these missing elements by using false colour or enhancing by making visible the few remaining faded pigment colour particles. To do this the photo tif or jpg file can be opened in an image editor program on our field laptop, and quickly altered to obtain an enhancement of those features that share the same colour range as the visible pictograph.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of software programs that we can use. GIMP is one product that is freely available for download and use, and runs on Windows, Mac and Unix. URL: http:\/\/www.gimp.org\/<\/p>\n<p>Using this product, or another editor with similar functionality, we follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Choose File &gt; Open: the \u201coverview\u201d rockart photo.<\/li>\n<li>From the GIMP Main Menu, select Tools &gt; Color Tools &gt; Hue-Saturation Tool.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-753 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/rangifercentral\/wp-content\/uploads\/GIMP_menu1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/rangifercentral\/wp-content\/uploads\/GIMP_menu1.png 600w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/rangifercentral\/wp-content\/uploads\/GIMP_menu1-160x96.png 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/rangifercentral\/wp-content\/uploads\/GIMP_menu1-240x144.png 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/rangifercentral\/wp-content\/uploads\/GIMP_menu1-400x241.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/rangifercentral\/wp-content\/uploads\/GIMP_menu1-360x217.png 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>From the Adjust Hue \/ Lightness \/ Saturation Menu Box, select Red as the primary colour to adjust.
