In collaboration with the university\u2019s five faculties, it launched the $800,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/coris\/cu-covid-19-rapid-research-response-grants-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CU COVID-19 Rapid Response Research Grants<\/a> program to solicit proposals and swiftly support projects that address the pandemic.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_535\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-535\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rafik-goubran-1200w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Vice-President (Research and International) Rafik Goubran\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" class=\"size-full wp-image-535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rafik-goubran-1200w-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rafik-goubran-1200w-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rafik-goubran-1200w-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rafik-goubran-1200w-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rafik-goubran-1200w-1-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vice-President (Research and International) Rafik Goubran<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Within weeks, 59 professors were awarded up to $25,000 to conduct timely research in areas such as e-health, autonomous systems, data science, machine learning, eldercare, epidemiology and more.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen a crisis touches every aspect of our lives, researchers from all academic backgrounds have a valuable contribution to make,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/about\/university-executive\/the-vice-president-research-and-international\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rafik Goubran<\/a>, Carleton\u2019s Vice-President (Research and International).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic is multifaceted, and our response to it must be equally so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From engineering and architecture to food security, here\u2019s a small sampling of stories about how Carleton faculty are gearing up to help.<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">Dr. Robot<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Practising medicine wasn\u2019t meant to be an occupational hazard, but hundreds of thousands of health-care workers have already been infected by COVID-19 globally, and the pandemic is far from over. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/profile\/mojtaba-ahmadi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mojtaba Ahmadi<\/a> wants to help these workers stay safe by developing a robot that lets doctors assess people remotely, so they can maintain distance while treating COVID-19 patients.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s an intelligent telepresence device that allows remote presence, but it\u2019s also able to assist with certain tasks,\u201d says Ahmadi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The device enables live video communication between a patient and a doctor in another room. Initially, this work started as part of an undergraduate capstone project led by Ahmadi, rooted in his research on medical robotics, but the pandemic created additional urgency, so it has become the main focus for three grad students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should have a physical robot before the end of the year,\u201d he says, \u201cand we\u2019re hoping to do some tests in the hallways at Carleton and see how it works. We want to get feedback on the user interface, because that\u2019s how it\u2019s controlled. After that, we hope to make a clinical version of the robotic system that can be used in a hospital and help keep health-care workers safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--full\"><img width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-1200w-2.jpg\" class=\"u-width-full\" alt=\"Rapid Responders\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-1200w-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-1200w-2-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-1200w-2-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-1200w-2-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-1200w-2-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--white\"><div class=\"u-width-small\">\n<h2 align=\"center\">Safe Shopping<\/h2>\n<p>Sleek minimalist lines and well-ventilated airy spaces are a hallmark of modern architecture, but modern buildings don\u2019t only look clean \u2014 they have provided sanitary living conditions on an unprecedented scale.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere is a way to read modern architecture as a reaction to the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 and multiple tuberculosis outbreaks around the same time,\u201d says architecture professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/architecture\/profile\/zachary-colbert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Colbert<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOpen spaces, window walls, mechanical ventilation and building codes are all partly responses to public health concerns. Now that there is another major health crisis, I\u2019m really curious about how architecture and urban design will respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_538\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-538\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Zach Colbert\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Zach Colbert<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Colbert received a grant to explore how architectural interventions can help businesses adapt to COVID-19. Some changes are relatively easy to implement, such as touch-free doorknob alternatives and using antimicrobial materials. Others involve more substantive changes, including novel ventilation strategies and making greater use of outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Some industries are better suited to adaptation than others. Restaurants have struggled, but for cities themselves, there might be a silver lining. As streets incorporate more patios, they become more lively and walkable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe needed pedestrian streets long before the pandemic,\u201d says Colbert.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey promote a healthy urban lifestyle. For architects, there is a real opportunity to take a leadership role and consider how public life can still be excellent, even when a two-metre radius is maintained.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">Autistic Adaptation<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>More and more autistic students are enrolling at universities worldwide, but many experience challenges with traditional classroom-based courses that were developed to meet the needs of the non-autistic majority. The pandemic has forced the rapid adoption of new learning platforms and online tools, and this provides an opportunity to assess whether some of these tools could work better for autistic students than traditional teaching methods.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_539\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-539\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-2.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Natasha Artemeva \" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Natasha Artemeva<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/slals\/people\/artemeva-natasha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natasha Artemeva<\/a> from Carleton\u2019s School of Linguistics and Language Studies is studying how autistic students have adapted to the changes caused by COVID-19 and, with speech pathologist and PhD candidate Jacquie Ballantine, is conducting interviews with autistic students, non-autistic students and instructors.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAutistic students are usually asked to produce work and communicate according to a non-autistic way of being,\u201d says Artemeva, who wants to use this unique moment to identify which adaptive course delivery strategies autistic students prefer, with the aim of understanding what steps can be taken to improve the retention of autistic students in the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThere are some autistic students who find large lecture halls and crowded campus spaces exhausting,\u201d says Ballantine, \u201cand they\u2019re telling us that the changes caused by COVID have removed some of the anxiety and stress of being surrounded by so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">Healthy Hospitals<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Hospitals have put strict cleaning protocols in place to prevent coronavirus transmission, but they have not yet been able to evaluate how well these protocols work.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_540\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-540\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-3.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Alex Wong\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-3-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Alex Wong<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn a health-care setting, if you have sick patients coughing and sneezing, they can expel droplets that contain the coronavirus on the floor, railings, elevator buttons and door handles,\u201d says biology professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/alex-wong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Wong<\/a>, who received a grant to develop and validate protocols for detecting the virus in health-care settings.<\/p>\n<p>The most direct application for Wong\u2019s research will be for hospital cleaning, and whether there are areas or pieces of equipment that should be cleaned more frequently. But the same techniques could also help determine if the virus lingers in outdoor public spaces, and even whether the airborne virus is circulating in ventilation systems.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be sampling in both low-density and high-density areas,\u201d says Wong, who also received an NSERC grant for the development of an ultraviolet light-based decontamination system for N95 masks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf we turn up a bunch of positive samples areas where there is not a lot of traffic from the coronavirus ward, it could suggest that there are other mechanisms of transmission.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">Farm to Table<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>When the pandemic struck, Canada\u2019s food systems were disrupted. Gallons of milk were dumped and thousands of chickens were slaughtered. Large industrial farms suffered major COVID outbreaks. Nearly 1,000 employees at one Alberta beef processing plant contracted the virus. Hundreds of temporary foreign workers in Ontario and Quebec tested positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody\u2019s saying we should get rid of industrial farms, but we also need to find ways to support smaller farms,\u201d says communications professor and food systems specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/knezevic-irena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Irena Knezevic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_541\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-541\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-4.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Irena Knezevic\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-4.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-4-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Irena Knezevic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey provide resilience when there are shocks. It\u2019s a conversation that\u2019s been going on for years in food systems research, but it was often treated as a bit of a pipe dream. With the pandemic, these issues are starting to become part of the public discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knezevic was awarded a grant to study the pandemic\u2019s impact on consumer purchasing habits. She\u2019s working with researchers from Kwantlen Polytechnic University\u2019s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems to collect data from B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. One survey was conducted over the summer and a follow-up will determine whether the changes consumers made continued.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at how access to food has changed and trying to understand if people are able to discern between industrial food and smaller-scale alternatives,\u201d says Knezevic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe want to understand where people are purchasing food and whether they\u2019re supporting smaller producers. We want to know how people are accessing food in practical terms, but also whether a certain set of values is represented in their purchasing habits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">Viral Defence<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>There has been plenty of buzz about a possible vaccine for COVID-19, but it is entirely possible that researchers will devise effective treatments before a vaccine is ready.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_548\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-548\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-5b.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Ashkan Golshani\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-5b.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/rapid-responders-300w-5b-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Ashkan Golshani<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Biology professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/ashkan-golshani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashkan Golshani<\/a> is developing peptides \u2014 chains of amino acids \u2014 intended to interfere with the reproduction of SARSCoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Golshani is working with researchers at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and University of California San Francisco to design peptides that bind to a protein tied to the reproduction of the virus. This would prevent the virus from replicating and causing the heavy viral loads that are often present in the most severe forms of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, fellow biology researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/kyle-biggar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Biggar<\/a> and Systems and Computer Engineering professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sce.carleton.ca\/faculty\/green\/green.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Green<\/a> are also working on peptide treatments. They\u2019re seeking to prevent the virus from interacting with humans.<\/p>\n<p>Green\u2019s lab is using algorithms to model how the virus interacts with its host, while Biggar\u2019s lab will be testing potential treatments identified by the algorithms with the aim of developing peptides that prevent these interactions from occurring at all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/\">Raven Magazine<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last spring, when work at universities around the world was put on pause, researchers from every field imaginable asked an important question: What can we do to help?
