{"id":55,"date":"2020-01-09T00:06:06","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T05:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/?post_type=cu-stories&#038;p=55"},"modified":"2020-01-29T12:09:28","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T17:09:28","slug":"tvo-indigenous-journalism","status":"publish","type":"cu-stories","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/story\/tvo-indigenous-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Amplifying Untold Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shelbylisk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shelby Lisk<\/a>, a reporter based at Carleton through a new partnership with TVO to create an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvo.org\/current-affairs\/tag\/indigenous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indigenous Hub<\/a> on campus, started her job three weeks before last fall\u2019s federal election. Naturally, her first story for the provincial media organization was about why Indigenous people don\u2019t vote. Sort of.<\/p>\n<p>Lisk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvo.org\/article\/seven-centuries-before-confederation-there-was-the-haudenosaunee-confederacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote about the Haudenosaunee Confederacy<\/a>, a political system that predated Canada by about 700 years and ensured peace between five nations \u2014 Mohawk, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga and Oneida \u2014 and later a sixth, the Tuscarora. But as with many aspects of Indigenous culture, the Canadian government ignored the confederacy and imposed a colonial system of elected band councils.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI thought if people could understand that we have our own system, that we see ourselves as a sovereign nation, that we have our own governance that worked for us for a thousand years,\u201d says Lisk, \u201cthen maybe instead of just saying, \u2018Indigenous people don\u2019t vote,\u2019 they might understand why.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lisk, a Turtle Clan member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/mbq-tmt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte First Nation<\/a>, grew up in Belleville, Ont., and didn\u2019t speak Mohawk. Neither did her mother, who was raised in Toronto. In fact, many of Lisk\u2019s relatives severed their roots, spoke English and hid their identities. That ends with Lisk.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--full\"><img width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-2.jpg\" class=\"u-width-full\" alt=\"Shelby Lisk\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-2-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-2-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-2-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-2-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--white\"><div class=\"u-width-small\">\n<h2 align=\"center\">Indigenous Journalism as a Tool to Create Community<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>With a tattoo on her left arm which asks <em>skennen\u2019ko\u0301:wa ken?<\/em> \u2014 a Mohawk greeting which means <em>do you have the great peace?<\/em> \u2014 and a vow to learn Mohawk, Lisk is trying to re-stitch the frayed fabric of her life and, by extension, her community.<\/p>\n<p>She plans to spend her one-year contract at TVO writing stories about Indigenous people and issues in Ontario thanks to a $2-million donation from Goldie Feldman and the Barry and Laurie Green Family Charitable Trust to fund four regional TVO hubs, plus the Indigenous hub at Carleton. The donations also pay to translate her articles into Indigenous languages, and the partnership with the university, part of the evolution of journalism education, will cultivate connections between Lisk and students, faculty and the broader Carleton community.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI became a journalist because I didn\u2019t see positive representations of Indigenous people in media while I was growing up,\u201d Lisk wrote in an opinion piece for TVO.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI can hardly imagine waking up every morning to read a newspaper or news articles in my language. That is a remarkable step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lisk, 27, a poet, photographer and artist, didn\u2019t grow up wanting to be a journalist. But once she realized it was about storytelling, she saw journalism as a means to uncover her own story and amplify other untold stories.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--full\"><img width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-3.jpg\" class=\"u-width-full\" alt=\"Shelby Lisk\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-3-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-3-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-3-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/amplifying-untold-stories-1200w-3-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--white\"><div class=\"u-width-small\">\n<h2 align=\"center\">Indigenous People in Contemporary Media<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>With dual roots \u2014 her father is non-Indigenous \u2014 Lisk feels like a bridge between two worlds and hopes to accomplish a pair of sometimes competing goals: educate settlers about Indigenous newsmakers and culture, and create more representations of Indigenous people in contemporary media.<\/p>\n<p>But Indigenous reporters have added challenges. She\u2019s aware of her own biases, struggles with concepts of impartiality and feels the pressure, real or imagined, to make her community proud.<\/p>\n<p>That Lisk is young and still figuring out journalism concepts and ethics is actually beneficial to the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journalism school<\/a>, says its director, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/harada-susan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susan Harada<\/a>, because through her, students can glimpse the complex reality of reporting from an Indigenous perspective. \u201cStudents aren\u2019t expecting cut-and-dried answers,\u201d says Harada. \u201cIt\u2019s OK for Shelby to puzzle through things out loud with students.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe take the <a href=\"http:\/\/trc.ca\/assets\/pdf\/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action<\/a> very seriously,\u201d continues Harada, focusing specifically on No. 86, which calls upon journalism programs to incorporate Indigenous history and context.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHaving Shelby here, as a journalist-in-residence, is a really important visible sign to our students that there are perspectives they need to consider and we have someone here in our midst who can help us do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lot of weight on young shoulders. Sometimes Lisk wonders whether she can live up to everyone\u2019s expectations, including her own. But she knows the journey itself has worth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI remember moments in my life where someone has said to me, \u2018I didn\u2019t think anybody else felt this way until I read your work,\u2019\u201d she says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI never want another young person to grow up not knowing or being ashamed of who they are.
