<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have a significant impact on the student&#8217;s capacity to meet their academic obligations; and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>could not have reasonably been prevented. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Extenuating circumstances may include sudden illness or incapacitation, including mental health and compassionate circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experiencing diverse challenges and stressors (ex: managing workload, competing deadlines, or inclement weather amongst others) is considered typical within the university experience. These are not considered extenuating circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"course-work-or-other-academic-deliverables\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Work or Other Academic Deliverables <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For academic work assigned to students not including formally scheduled final examinations and take-home exams, students must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consult the course syllabus about the instructor\u2019s policy or procedures for requesting academic consideration. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the instructor(s) as soon as possible and normally no later than 24 hours after the submission deadline. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If supporting documentation is required by the instructor, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/academic-consideration-coursework-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complete the online Academic Consideration for Coursework Form<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If granted, complete and submit course work per academic consideration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"formally-scheduled-exams-take-home-exams\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Formally Scheduled Exams &amp; Take-Home Exams <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For undergraduate students: contact the Registrar\u2019s Office to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/deferral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apply to defer an exam<\/a> within 3 working days after the original final examination date or the original due date of the take-home examination. The Registrar\u2019s Office appeals process does not apply to formally scheduled final and take-home examinations. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For graduate students: contact the instructor\/academic unit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"student-appeals-process\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Appeals Process <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In cases where the student has concerns about a request for academic consideration, the student may initiate an informal appeal with the instructor and, as appropriate, the departmental Chair or Director. The informal appeal must be initiated within 3 working days of the original decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the informal process does not address their concerns, the student may submit a formal appeal to the Dean of the Faculty offering the course within 3 working days of the completion of the informal appeal. The decision of the Dean is final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"long-term-extenuating-circumstances-more-than-five-days\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long Term Extenuating Circumstances \u2013 More Than Five Days<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If students encounter extenuating circumstances that temporarily hinder their capacity to fulfil academic requirements for a period that exceeds five days, additional documentation may be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"course-work-or-other-academic-deliverables\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Work or Other Academic Deliverables <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For academic work assigned to students not including formally scheduled final examinations and take-home exams, students must,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consult the course syllabus about the instructor\u2019s policy or procedures for requesting academic consideration <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the instructor(s) as soon as possible to discuss academic considerations. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If supporting documentation is required, students must provide the Registrar&#8217;s Office with supporting documentation within 2 days of submitting the form. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"mailto:academicconsideration@cunet.carleton.ca\">The supporting documentation must be submitted via email<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If granted, complete and submit course work per academic consideration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"formally-scheduled-exams-take-home-exams\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Formally Scheduled Exams &amp; Take-Home Exams <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For undergraduate students: contact the Registrar\u2019s Office to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/deferral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apply to defer an exam<\/a> within 3 working days after the original final examination date or the original due date of the take-home examination.
