id=\"welcome-to-your-bachelor-of-information-technology-degree-program\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Welcome to your Bachelor of Information Technology degree program!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Please read this degree guide prior to registering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"your-degree-program\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Degree Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) offers three distinct programs that grant you a Bachelor of Information Technology degree. Each program is offered jointly with Algonquin College and also earns you a college diploma. Students graduate with a strong theoretical grounding, complemented by practical knowledge in their discipline<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"co-op\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Co-op<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students\u2019 development as Network, Multimedia, or Information Resource specialists can be further enhanced by combining academic studies with hands-on practice. First-hand experience in the field, as well as contacts in industry, can be gained through participation in the BIT co-op option. Normally co-op students complete at least three work terms \u2014 the first beginning in 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;year winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All BIT students who meet the co-op academic requirements are eligible to participate in the co-op program. For undergraduate students who were not admitted to Carleton with the co-op option, student co-op applications can be submitted via mySuccess (from your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/360.carleton.ca\/urd\/sits.urd\/run\/siw_lgn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton Central<\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>account).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"where-do-i-go-throughout-the-year-for-program-information\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Where do I go throughout the year for program information?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitdegree.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Information Technology<\/a>&nbsp;office is located at 230 Azrieli Pavilion, and you can contact an advisor by email at&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:csit-ug-advising@cunet.carleton.ca\">csit-ug-advising@cunet.carleton.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"courses-required-for-first-year\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Courses Required for First Year<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following tables provide a list of first-year courses for BIT students. Please consult the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/undergrad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Undergraduate Calendar<\/a>&nbsp;and\/or the BIT website (<a href=\"http:\/\/bitdegree.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BITdegree.ca<\/a>) for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"first-year-imd-courses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">First-year IMD courses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All courses below, except for the 1.0 credit Arts &amp; Humanities electives (fall and winter) and the 0.5 credit Programming I elective (winter), are preselected as part of your assigned&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registration\/block-registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">block registration<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\"><strong>You must select&nbsp;<\/strong>and register for&nbsp;your electives yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the&nbsp;<strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Arts &amp; Humanities electives<\/strong>, students must choose from undergraduate courses at Carleton University outside the faculties of Business, Science and Engineering; course prerequisites apply. It can be a single course worth 1.0 credit (lasting both fall and winter), or two courses worth 0.5 credits. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitdegree.ca\/pdf\/Arts_Humanities_Elective_Sep.2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of approved elective courses<\/a>&nbsp;can be found at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitdegree.ca\/index.php?Program=BIT&amp;Section=Handbook&amp;Page=Registration\">BITdegree.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the&nbsp;<strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Programming I elective<\/strong>, students must choose between either&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/search\/?P=BIT%201400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BIT 1400: Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving<\/a>, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/search\/?P=ITEC%201401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ITEC 1401: Introduction to Scripting and Problem Solving<\/a>. Students who have some confidence in programming or who wish to pursue a career in programming are encouraged to choose BIT 1400. A minor is a secondary concentration of courses in an area that interests you.&nbsp;<strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">There are no electives in the IRM program<\/strong>.&nbsp;It is advised that students declare their minor before registering in the appropriate courses required to complete their first-year timetable. Course requirements in the minor can be found in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/undergrad\/undergradprograms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Undergraduate Calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have decided on your minor, contact&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/contactandgeneralinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Admissions<\/a>&nbsp;to add it to your student record or submit a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/program-elements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Change of Program Elements<\/a>&nbsp;through Carleton Central after the close of registration. If you are not able to add the minor of your choice this year or courses in your minor are creating a timetable conflict, you can take the 1.0 credit French language course instead. This is a course at an appropriate level of French based on your current understanding of the French language. You must complete an<a href=\"https:\/\/edc.carleton.ca\/french_placement\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;online placement test<\/a>&nbsp;prior to registration. Please note, only FREN subject codes are accepted (no FINS courses). If you are francophone, you can take courses numbered FREN 2200 or higher. French courses fill up quickly.
