Leigh Schmidt is a scholar of American religion, and a member of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics. He is the author of many books, including Consumer Rites: The Buying and Selling of American Holidays (Princeton University Press, 1995), and Restless Souls: The Making of American Spirituality (Revised Edition: University of California Press, 2012). This lecture is part of his forthcoming project with Princeton University Press, entitled Village Atheists: A Cultural History of American Belief.
