Please note that the below information expands on the regulations outlined in in 11.1-11.4 of the Graduate Calendar.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"passing-grade-in-the-department-of-systems-and-computer-engineering\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Passing Grade in the Department of Systems and <span style=\"font-size: 18.72px;\">Computer<\/span> Engineering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"grades-and-academic-standing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grades and Academic Standing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As per <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradregulations\/administrationoftheregulations\/#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">graduate regulations 11.2 and 11.3 in the Graduate Calendar<\/a>, Graduate students in System and Computer Engineering must obtain a <strong>grade of B- or better<\/strong> to earn credit in a course. A candidate may, with the support of the departmental graduate supervisor\/associate chair (graduate affairs) and the approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, be allowed a grade of C+ in 1.0 credit. The Department of Systems &amp; Computer Engineering does not permit the C+ option and applies a B- minimum rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Full-Time Continuation<\/strong><br>\nFull-time master&#8217;s students who fail to achieve a weighted GPA of 7.0 after two terms of study, or to maintain it subsequently, will be required to withdraw from the program. In the event of special or extenuating circumstances, the student may apply through the program graduate supervisor\/associate chair (graduate affairs) to the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs for permission to continue in the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Part-Time Continuation<\/strong><br>\nPart-time master&#8217;s students who fail to achieve or maintain a weighted GPA of 7.0 after completing 2.0 credits, or to maintain it subsequently, will be required to withdraw from the program. In the event of special or extenuating circumstances, the student may apply through the program graduate supervisor\/associate chair (graduate affairs) to the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs for permission to continue in the program.<\/p>\n\n\n        <\/dd>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <div class=\"grid pt-4 pb-3 border-b accordion border-cu-black-100 md:pt-6 md:pb-5 first:border-t\">\n        <dt class=\"font-semibold not-prose\">\n            <button class=\"flex items-center justify-between w-full text-left accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"accordion-phd-program-good-standing-and-academic-warning\">\n                <span class=\"flex-1 ml-auto text-left break-words whitespace-normal cu-icon\">\n                    PhD Program Good Standing and Academic Warning\n                <\/span>\n                <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" fill=\"none\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke=\"currentColor\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-slot=\"icon\" class=\"w-5 h-5 ml-auto transition-transform rotate-0 accordion__icon text-cu-black-500\">\n                    <path stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" d=\"M8.25 4.5l7.5 7.5-7.5 7.5\"><\/path>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/button>\n        <\/dt>\n        <dd class=\"p-0 mt-0 cu-prose cu-prose-first-last accordion__content md:p-0 md:mt-0\" hidden=\"\" id=\"accordion-phd-program-good-standing-and-academic-warning\">\n            \n\n<p><strong>11.3 Doctoral Program<\/strong><br>\nDoctoral students must obtain a grade of B- or better in each course credited towards the degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11.4 Departmental Evaluation<\/strong><br>\nIn addition to the above requirements, departments will undertake a periodic evaluation of a student&#8217;s progress in his or her overall program to determine whether that progress is satisfactory. In the event that progress is deemed unsatisfactory, the program graduate supervisor may recommend to the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs that the student be required to withdraw.<\/p>\n\n\n        <\/dd>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <\/dl>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"academic-warning\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Academic Warning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who are placed on <strong>academic warning <\/strong>as a results of obtaining a low GPA, as per the above definitions, have until the end of the subsequent term improve their GPA. Students who are placed on academic warning are encouraged to review their study plans and practices, discuss their options with their Thesis Supervisor(s) (if a MASc or PhD student) or the <a href=\"mailto:sysc.gradmin@cunet.carleton.ca\">Graduate Advising team<\/a> (if a MEng student) and follow their guidance. Due to the nature of Academic Warning, students are only provided one term to improve their grades. Additional opportunities to improve performance will not be provided beyond the first term after academic warning. Consequently, students who are <strong>not able to raise their GPA<\/strong> sufficiently will be <strong>withdrawn from the program<\/strong>. If a student is able to raise their GPA beyond 7.0 they will be taken off of academic warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading sectionedit1\" id=\"grade_appeal_process_-_informal_grade_appeal\">Grade Appeal Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sectionedit1\">Students who would like to appeal a grade should first begin by making a request to the course instructor. If, after receiving a response from the instructor, the student is not satisfied, the students may contact the Department&#8217;s Chair to commence a formal grade appeal.
