Title: Exploring the Design and Development of Patient Health Data Visualizations

Abstract: Since the late 20th century, expectations of both healthcare providers and patients have changed towards a model of active patients. Patients show early signs of interest in creating a care plan for their illnesses and in keeping track of their health. Healthcare services are also making more individualized patient care plans where patients can monitor their health statuses and set their own health goals. However, it is challenging to increase patients’ involvement in their care; such strategies may place extra pressure on the patients’ shoulders. While research shows that technology can help mitigate potential challenges that patients face developing their care plan, the questions of how, where, and what technologies to design remain unanswered. In my research, I address the need to design effective technologies and data visualization tools that can help patients and healthcare providers increase patient engagement and provide means for collaboratively analyzing patient health data. In this talk, I will discuss (1) expanding our understanding of the communication challenges between patients and healthcare providers, (2) designing and developing visualizations to support data-driven communication between patients and providers, and (3) integrating data visualization tools into the real-world systems.
About the Speaker: Dr. Fateme Rajabiyazdi is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University. Before joining Carleton, she was a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Surgery, McGill University Health Center, where she was a recipient of FRQS (Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Quebec) postdoc scholarship in 2020. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Calgary in 2018. She is also a two-time recipient of the W21C health services research scholarship funded through Alberta Innovates (2015-2017). Her research focuses on the design and development of data visualization tools to support patients with their medical care management.
