Group counselling for 2SLGBTQIA+ students registration deadline

June 21, 2021 at 4:00 PM

Hello CU community!

Health and Counselling Services (HCS) is excited to launch Affirmative Space: A Group for 2SLGBTQIA+ Mental Health and Social Engagement in collaboration with the Gender and Sexuality Resource Centre (GSRC). Please find the attached group information sheet. I would like to ask that your department distributes this information to all students so that those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+, questioning, or transitioning can take advantage of this group over the summer.

Unlike traditional group counselling, this is a unique opportunity for students to participate in group counselling sessions along with peer-to-peer social engagement and resource navigation during these challenging times of public health crisis. Each group session is 2-hour long from 1:00-3:00pm and there are 6 sessions in total over the summer. The first session will begin on Wednesday, June 23.

Advanced registration is required by Monday, June 21st at 4:00 PM. Please call main reception at Health and Counselling Services at (613) 520-6674. Space is limited as the group hopes to establish a small and safe space for all. Shortly after registering, a mental health counsellor will conduct a 15-minute brief intake call. The purpose of intake is to ensure that each participant understands the group rules and confidentiality, and most importantly to assess suitability for the group as it aims to create a safe and affirmative space. This group is only open to those students who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ or those who are questioning their gender and sexuality.

This group aims to break down the barriers in social engagements and access to mental health services by bringing the community together. Most importantly, it aims to create a space for the community to affirm their voice by collectively sharing experiences and knowledge.

We hope that your students will find this information of help. Thank you for your cooperation in spreading words for this important initiative for 2SLGBTQIA+ students at CU. If you or students have any questions, please contact me directly at this email address. For registration, students must call Health and Counselling Services at (613) 520-6674.

Sincerely,
