The MCS program leads to a graduate degree in Computer Science. The program combines breadth knowledge in computer science through course work and depth knowledge in the area of specialization through research (MCS Thesis option) or through a research project.*
Program requirements and timelines for various options of master’s program are listed below.
- MCS Thesis
-
Program Requirements
To be completed by
Coursework – Five graduate courses (2.5 credits) Consult with your supervisor(s) regarding course selection. The courses must satisfy the OCICS area requirement of a minimum of three COMP 5xxx courses in three different research areas. Note that a course cannot be taken to satisfy simultaneously two areas: one course counts for only one area.
Within 2 terms of initial registration Thesis – COMP 5905 (2.5 credits) Student must forward an email to Grad.SCS@carleton.ca that clearly outlines their supervisor(s) approval to begin working on the master’s thesis. It’s important to remember that once the thesis is started continuous registration must be maintained until completion. This includes registering in the summer term.
Please note: A candidate may be permitted to carry out thesis work (COMP 5905) off campus provided suitable arrangements are made for supervision and experimental work, and prior approval is given by the School.

- MCS Co-operative Education
Co-operative education is based on the principle that academic studies combined with work experience are desirable for effective professional preparation. In addition to all other requirements for the degree, students admitted to the co-operative option must satisfactorily complete two work terms placements with a suitable employer in order to graduate with a co-op designation on their transcripts and diplomas. It is desirable that the work placements be related to the student’s research. Placements are subject to the approval of the Supervisor of Graduate Studies and of the student’s research supervisor. Each work term is of four months in duration and students will conduct job searches through the university’s co-op office. During a work term, students will register in COMP 5913. While on a work term, students in this option are limited to taking one additional 0.5-credit course, or registering in their thesis. Interested students may apply at the end of the first term for the Co-op option, provided they meet the minimum grade requirements etc. (for details, see COMP 5913).Program Requirements
