VMware Virtualization Software
The School of Computer Science provides limited access to VMware for use on student devices to run School of Computer Science Virtual Machines. This provides an alternative to Virtualbox if that hypervisor is not running well on your device.

Eligibility for VMware
VMware licenses must be requested and are provided on a case-by-case and need assessed basis.
Eligibility Details:
- All students are expected to first try to install Virtualbox and test it with the SCS Virtual Machines. All of our support documentation is based on VirtualBox, so it is best if you can use that hypervisor.
- Our Virtual Machines have extensive Technical Support. You are expected to go through all those support mechanisms prior to requesting a VMware license.
- If after going through that technical support, you still have difficulties, then you can Request a License for VMware
Eligible Technical Problems:
- VirtualBox will not install or will not open
- VirtualBox Virtual Machines will not launch
- VirtualBox Virtual Machines crash frequently and unexpectedly
- VirtualBox Virtual Machines suffer performance issues that make them unusable
Requesting a License
A license can be requested from SCS Technical Support using this SCS VMware Request Tool which will ensure your are in an eligible School of Computer Science Program/Course.
WARNING: It may take up to two (2) business days for your VMware request to be processed
NOTE: The SCS Technical Support Team may ask to do further debugging of your device and ask for details of the steps you performed and the past support you received (such as from TAs, Lab Coordinators or the SCS Technical Support Team)
How to get your license, once it is approved
Steps:
1. After clicking the link in the invitation email, you will land on this page. Click the green button
2. Click the register button
3. Create an account using your Carleton email address (make sure to use the same email address that received the invitation)
4. Click the redeem button to redeem the subscription
5. After redeeming, click the link to go to the D2L Brightspace website
6. Click the VMware Software Licenses tab
7. Click the Software Products & License Keys button
8. Follow the instructions to complete the license redemption and software download
