Carolyn Fenwick, BCSM\/2017: A Long Road- But One Worth Travelling<\/h2>\n

Carolyn Fenwick, an Ottawa mother of two and recent School of Computer Science graduate tells us how she was able to accomplish her academic goals while following an unconventional career path and balancing family commitments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it was time in high school to apply for university, I was struggling a lot with what I wanted to do,\u201d says Carolyn<\/p>\n

\u201cI originally\u00a0decided to go into math and become a teacher because my\u00a0math teacher inspired me to love math\u201d she says, \u201cAbout\u00a0halfway through the year, I realized, math is cool but I don\u2019t really love being around kids, and\u00a0I don\u2019t like talking to large groups of people. What am I doing here?\u201d\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After a year spent studying Mathematics at the University of Ottawa,\u00a0Carolyn decided to quit school and began working first in retail, then as an administrative assistant. After several years, she felt like she needed to get a degree in order to progress further down her career path, so she began taking computer science courses\u00a0part-time at\u00a0Athabasca University.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Carolyn later learned that Carleton University would accept her transfer credits from Athabasca and her classes at the University of Ottawa, the decision to study full-time at Carleton was an easy one.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith kids in grade one and grade seven, it\u2019s a lot of tight scheduling with school drop off before class,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it can be challenging, but I\u00a0remind myself that I\u2019m doing this for a reason. And now, very soon, it will be worth it,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe mathematics wasn\u2019t where I wanted to be, but I shut a lot of doors for myself by not getting my degree,\u201d says Carolyn.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut, hindsight is twenty-twenty. Luckily, I got a do-over,\u201d says Carolyn, \u201cNow I\u2019m here because I want to be here and\u00a0not just because it\u2019s what I\u2019m supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
