You can share with an email, federated cloud ID, Nextcloud user or circle.<\/p>\n<p>Key info:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>web interface<\/li>\n<li>worldwide file-sharing<\/li>\n<li>has sync clients for the popular O\/S&#8217;s<\/li>\n<li>data resides at SCS at Carleton in Ottawa Canada<\/li>\n<li>SCS quota is at 20GB<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More info: <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/technical-support\/scs-nextcloud-documentation\/\">SCS Nextcloud<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Webpages<\/h3>\n<p>Naturally, a webpage is a file-sharing mechanism. It is a good way to distribute data files if the data is not sensitive or has personal information.<\/p>\n<p>How to share files: Upload your files to the webserver\/service and then distribute the URL<\/p>\n<p>Be aware of potential issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you can share to more than your intended audience; privacy issues<\/li>\n<li>files can be indexed by the common search engines<\/li>\n<li>data resides where the website is hosted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More Info: <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/technical-support\/scs-faculty-tech-resources\/web-resources\/\">SCS Web Resources<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Third-Party File-Sharing services<\/h3>\n<p>There are third-party file-sharing companies like Dropbox and Google Drive. Carleton University \/ ITS has chosen OneDrive as the preferred file-sharing mechanism.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>BitTorrent is a communication protocol for peer-to-peer file-sharing (P2P). It is an exceptionally good protocol to transfer large data files. There are privacy concerns when using BitTorrent services!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Please see the ITS Guidelines for Cloud Computing services:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/2016\/cloud-computing-guidelines\/\">Cloud Computing Guidelines<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/onedrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton University\/Microsoft OneDrive<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Big Data: Servers, NAS Boxes, and OpenStack<\/h3>\n<p>If you have big data requirements, you may want some sort of Network Attached Storage (NAS). They come in all shapes and flavours, and it is a good idea to book an appointment with the SCS Tech staff to discuss your particular requirements. Typically these are research resources that are grant-funded.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Stack uses Cinder block storage. It&#8217;s designed to present storage resources to end-users that can be consumed by the OpenStack virtual machines.<\/li>\n<li>The school can host a NAS device like a Synology Disk Station<\/li>\n<li>You can host your own server and provide various levels of file-sharing and backups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Portable Media<\/h3>\n<p>You can share media by copying them to a portable media format and giving the recipient the media.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend that all sensitive information is encrypted when storing on portable media.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veracrypt.fr\/en\/Home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VeraCrypt is a free and open-source utility used for on-the-fly encryption<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Files can be shared by storing data on portable media like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>External disk drive<\/li>\n<li>USB thumb drive<\/li>\n<li>Archiving DVD (M-Disk)<\/li>\n<li>Memory Card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>University Policies<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/about\/policies\/cloud-computing-guidelines\/\">Cloud Computing Security<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/privacy\/policies\/\">Carleton University Privacy Office<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/secretariat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data-and-Information-Classification-and-Protection.pdf\">Data Information and Classification Protection (pdf)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>File-sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digital media.
