However, enabling this feature can often cause problems.  In particular, new version upgrades of VirtualBox often has 3D acceleration problems.  These problems usually get ironed out as further updates are released.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:red\"><em><strong>This issue has been documented by some users of VirtualBox 7.0.x when running older Virtual Machines<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<p>If your Virtual Machine is experiencing any of these issues, you should consider disabling the setting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unusually slow and poor performance while the Virtual Machine is running<\/li>\n<li>Inconsistent performance (sometimes fine, other times very slow)<\/li>\n<li>Regular crashing, especially when opening graphical apps within the Virtual Machine<\/li>\n<li>Virtual Machine hangs or crashes during boot (this often will happen to a previously working VM that stops working after a VirtualBox upgrade)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Disabling 3D Acceleration<\/h2>\n<p>This setting is adjusted in the VirtualBox Virtual Machine&#8217;s settings (see image below):<br \/>\n<em>uncheck the setting to disable<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Display<\/strong> -> <strong>Screen<\/strong> -> <strong>Extended Features:<\/strong> -> <strong><em>Enable 3D Acceleration<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/wp-content\/uploads\/virtualbox-3d-acceleration-setting.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"633\" height=\"459\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/wp-content\/uploads\/virtualbox-3d-acceleration-setting.png 633w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/wp-content\/uploads\/virtualbox-3d-acceleration-setting-240x174.png 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/wp-content\/uploads\/virtualbox-3d-acceleration-setting-400x290.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/wp-content\/uploads\/virtualbox-3d-acceleration-setting-160x116.png 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/wp-content\/uploads\/virtualbox-3d-acceleration-setting-360x261.png 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VirtualBox can take advantage of some of the capabilities of your host computer&#8217;s GPU to improve performance.
