Appointment of Jerry Tomberlin

Carleton University’s Board of Governors is pleased to announce the appointment of Jerry Tomberlin, dean of the Sprott School of Business, as the university’s acting provost and vice-president (Academic) for a two-year term effective July 1, 2017.

“The board has made a strategic decision to appoint a strong academic leader from within the university community to assume the important role of acting provost,” said Chris Carruthers, chair of the Board of Governors. “Jerry is highly regarded in his position as dean and his collaborative leadership style will provide continuity and serve the interests of the entire university community. On behalf of the board, I would like to congratulate Jerry on his appointment and thank him for agreeing to serve in this acting capacity.”

An announcement about the appointment of an acting dean of the Sprott School of Business will be made soon.

The Board of Governors, through its executive committee, continues to work with senior management to lead search processes for the acting and permanent president and permanent provost positions.

The board has issued a request for proposals from nationally known executive search firms to assist Carleton in conducting a nation-wide search for a permanent president and vice-chancellor. The search process may take 12 to 18 months. It is anticipated that a search firm will be selected shortly.

As per the board’s Appointment Guidelines for President and Vice-Chancellor, the Senate issued a call on April 10, 2017 seeking candidates to serve on the Advisory Committee on the President and Vice-Chancellor search. The deadline for nominations was April 19, 2017. Composition of the committee will be announced soon after elections are completed. The advisory committee will commence its work as early as May 2017.

The board’s communications strategy regarding the search will focus on updating the internal community first about any new developments.
To keep the university community informed, a dedicated presidential search web page is being developed and will be launched soon. This website will serve as the portal to share updates about the search process, including the search committee composition and opportunities for community input into the process.
