The Carleton University Board of Governors met on November 29, 2018. The following are highlights from the meeting. Minutes from the meeting will be posted on the Board of Governors website once available.

Board Fully Supports Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Committee

The co-chairs of the Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Committee shared an overview of the initiative and how they will be engaging the community in an effort to develop Carleton-specific recommendations to support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

The Board unanimously passed the motion outlining our full support and endorsement of this important work.

Prioritizing Students’ Mental Health

Our students are at the forefront of what we do. Their success is critical to Carleton’s success which is why we invited the student support team from Monreau Shepell, a human resources consulting company, to discuss their research in mental health in post-secondary institutions and trends in digital mental health support.

Recognize an Outstanding Student for Community Volunteerism

Nominations are now open for the Carleton University Board of Governors Award for Outstanding Community Achievement. This $2,000 financial award recognizes the spirit of student volunteerism and substantial community contribution while at Carleton University. All community members can nominate a deserving student. Click here to learn more about the Board Award.

Balanced Budget Planned

A balanced budget is planned for 2018/19. The framework for the 2019/20 Operating Budget was presented for information. The new framework focuses the three themes of academic & student experience, research, and administration. The framework also outlines the transitioning of planning and budgeting from the Finance and Administration office to the Provost’s office and the formation of the Provost Budget Working Group (PBWG). The Board will consider the Ancillary Budget in March and the Operating Budget in April.

Closing 2018 with Philanthropic Momentum and Enthusiasm

We are now over the 95 per cent mark of the $300-million goal! On Giving Tuesday, our community raised more than $1.2 million for student and associated on-campus projects!

The campaign total to date is more than $292 million with over $11.5 million raised so far this fiscal. The New Year will be a celebration of the campaign close and the generosity of our community.

Building Our Campus for Tomorrow

All current building projects are progressing. We discussed future projects and approved the creation of preliminary designs for the parking garage addition project. An update was provided on the Transportation Strategy. The university has invested $215.8 million in capital projects that are currently underway.
