Terms of Reference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Type of Committee: <\/span><\/strong>Standing Committee<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purpose: <\/span><\/strong>The Senate Graduate Student Appeal Committee (GSAC) is authorized to
\nmake a final decision in all cases of appeals by graduate students against decisions of
\nthe Dean on regulations in the graduate calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsibilities:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 <\/span>To examine appeals from graduate students against decisions of the Dean <\/span>in
\nrespect of academic petitions based on:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • The misapplication of an academic regulation contained in the graduate calendar;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The inappropriateness of the application of a regulation contained in the

    graduate calendar in the particular circumstances of the student.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 To <\/span>consider appeals from graduate students, on compassionate grounds, for
    \nrelief from the consequences of the application of a regulation in the graduate
    \ncalendar.<\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Membership:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 <\/span>Five faculty members broadly representative of the five line-faculties, one to
    \nserve as chair;
    \n<\/span>\u2022 <\/span>One graduate student;
    \n<\/span>\u2022 <\/span>A member of the graduate studies registrar\u2019s office (secretary) (non-voting).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Quorum and voting:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Quorum and voting are by simple majority.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Reporting:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The committee reports to Senate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Review:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    These terms of reference will be reviewed every seven years, or as needed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
