The last modifications from the community-wide consultation on the draft Carleton Academic Plan, which closed on March 13, were presented at Senate for final review and approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/carleton-academic-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finalized Carleton Academic Plan<\/a>, which will be officially launched shortly, is a key aspect of Carleton\u2019s roadmap to shaping the future and will play an integral role in operationalizing academic and research aspects of Carleton\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/president\/strategic-integrated-plan-sip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strategic Integrated Plan<\/a>&nbsp;and other important strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"senate-discusses-the-cupe-4600-strike\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Senate discusses the CUPE 4600 strike<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>President Bacon opened Senate with a discussion on the ongoing CUPE 4600 strike. He reminded Senate that this is a legal strike and an integral part of the collective bargaining process. He expressed hope that a relatively rapid solution will be found at the bargaining table, and encouraged everyone to remain respectful and compassionate of each other in the meantime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to student questions about the end of the winter term, Provost Jerry Tomberlin and VP Students &amp; Enrolment Suzanne Blanchard expressed that supporting student success was a priority and reassured Senate that everything would be put in place to that effect. Their comments and answers are summarized in an <a href=\"https:\/\/students.carleton.ca\/2023\/03\/supporting-students-throughout-the-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">email that has been sent to all students.<\/a> It was also indicated that there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/secretariat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Academic-Accommodations-During-Labour-Disputes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">formal Senate policy<\/a> addressing this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"undergraduate-and-graduate-major-modifications\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate and Graduate Major Modifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a large omnibus motion, Senate approved a total of 34 undergraduate and graduate major modifications. Changes included the introduction of a collaborative specialization in Accessibility to 16 programs and a collaborative specialization in Cybersecurity to 7 programs, approval of online delivery modes for the MEng, MEnt, MABA and MDTE in Technology Innovation Management, and several program name changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"quality-assurance-cyclical-reviews\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quality Assurance &amp; Cyclical Reviews<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate approved the Final Assessment Reports and Executive Summaries arising from the Cyclical Reviews of the following programs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Joint Graduate Programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joint Graduate Programs in Environmental Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in Film Studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in Philosophy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"senate-welcomes-new-members\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Senate Welcomes New Members<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate ratified ten new Senate appointments for terms of service beginning July 1, 2023:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty Members<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Laura Madokoro (FASS) <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Jody Mason (FASS)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Gabriel Wainer (FED) <\/em><em>\u2013<\/em><em> elected <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Student Members<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Shaun Seneviratne (UG <\/em><em>\u2013<\/em><em> FED) <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Alexandria MacDonald (UG <\/em><em>\u2013<\/em><em> FED) <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Benjamin Albright-Peakall (UG \u2013 FASS) <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Gabriella Pickton (UG \u2013 FPA) <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Davin Caratao (UG \u2013 FPA) <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Nir Hagigi (UG \u2013 FPA) <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Yash Gandhi (UG \u2013 Sprott)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"serve-on-a-senate-committee\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Serve on a Senate Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several Senate Committee vacancies remain open to Faculty and Students. All meetings will be held in Pigiarvik\u2019s (formerly Robertson Hall) new Senate Room on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> floor from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm unless otherwise indicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"senator-spotlight-donald-russell\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Senator Spotlight: Donald Russell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald Russell is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.&nbsp;In his 32 years at Carleton, he has always enjoyed teaching. His research interests have focused on the interaction of dynamic systems, and he has made contributions in a wide variety of areas including the&nbsp;biomechanics of musculoskeletal injury in skilled musicians;&nbsp;improved&nbsp;design and control of advanced prosthetic arms; and the control and dynamics of ventricular assist devices. &nbsp;He has been an Associate Dean for 17 years, was first elected to Senate in the mid-1990s, served as Clerk of Senate from 2015-2018 and has served on 11 different Senate standing committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"next-meeting-april-21-2023\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next Meeting: April 21, 2023<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next Senate meeting is scheduled for April 21, 2023, at 2 PM.&nbsp;The full meeting schedule, associated meeting materials and minutes are available on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/senate\/meetings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate website<\/a>.&nbsp;Meeting minutes&nbsp;are posted once they are approved at the subsequent meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senate met on March 31, 2023.&nbsp; Here are the highlights: Senate approves Carleton Academic Plan After a two-year process that included several presentations to Senate, the Carleton Academic Plan (CAP) has been finalized.
