Call for Nominations – Committee Chair<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Academic Governance committee of Senate is seeking nominations for a faculty member to serve as Chair of an Ad Hoc Committee on Petitions and Appeals<\/em>. Senate approved the formation of this ad hoc committee at its meeting on September 27, 2024. The committee\u2019s mandate will be to review and clarify the petitions and appeals processes and to create a Senate policy clarifying a common understanding of petitions and appeals and how they are handled.  The committee Terms of Reference have been posted below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The position of Chair is open to full-time faculty members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Strong understanding of and familiarity with the University\u2019s Petitions and Appeals practices<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Direct experience in dealing with petitions and appeals<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Senate and\/or Senate committee experience (preferred)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Experience chairing one or more committees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The ad hoc committee\u2019s work will commence in the Fall of 2024 and will continue for approximately 4 \u2013 5 months, or until the work is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The deadline for submitting an application is 4:30 pm on Friday October 4, 2024.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Petitions and Appeals
    \n<\/strong>Terms of Reference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The purpose of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Petitions and Appeals is to make recommendations to meet the current requirements of the University, including those resulting from the recent restructuring of the former Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Petitions and Appeals recommends to Senate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • a Senate Policy on Petitions and Appeals<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • any required changes to the Terms of Reference of the Senate Undergraduate Studies Committee (SUSC),<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • any other actions, within the purview of Senate, that result from a review of the current approach to Petitions and Appeals and, in particular, actions required to respond to the recent restructuring of the former Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Reporting <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Petitions and Appeals (through its Chair) reports regularly to Senate on its work and progress with the intent of bringing a report and recommendations to Senate by March 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Membership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Petitions and Appeals is constituted as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • One faculty member nominated by the Senate Academic Governance Committee as Chair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • One faculty member from each Faculty nominated by the corresponding Dean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • One faculty member nominated by the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) with experience with the past Petitions and Appeals practices of the former Faculty of Graduate and Post-doctoral Affairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Three support staff members, one from the Registrar’s Office with experience in petitions and appeals process, one from Graduate Studies, and one representing Ombuds Services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • The Chair of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on the Academic Integrity Policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        The Committee may invite others to serve as non-voting resources to provide information as required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Quorum and Voting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Quorum is a minimum of six of the 11 voting members of the Committee where the majority of quorum must be faculty members. Voting is by majority vote, with the Chair being non-voting except to break any ties. The Committee is expected to work in consultation with stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Meetings and Workload <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Members selected for the Committee are expected to serve until the Committee completes its work. The Committee will meet regularly and be supported by staff from the Senate Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
