Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Established by June Girvan, this bursary is offered to students undertaking personal study in Reconciliation – managing and interrupting the transmission of trauma that has been inherited from the student\u2019s ancestry in the Middle Passage and Slavery. The study may be in any discipline. Preference is given to candidates with personal ancestral ties to the Middle Passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selection Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of Student Affairs & Student Life to a full or part-time student in demonstrated financial need who is enrolled in any undergraduate degree program and is involved in student leadership, development, extracurricular activities, or community service opportunities. Eligible recipients will be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person), and must meet OSAP’s Ontario Residency requirements. Endowed in 1999 by June Y. Girvan. Revised in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One recipient of this award will be selected by a selection committee* with membership as indicated below. The bursary consists of an award of $6,000, to be applied to the recipient\u2019s student account .The award may be split equally should two eligible recipients be selected. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To qualify for the award, students must be a current full-time or part-time undergraduate student and must have ancestral ties to the Middle Passage and Slavery; be studying, personally or professionally the study of reconciliation; managing and interrupting the transmission of intergenerational trauma, demonstrate financial need, be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada, and meet OSAP Ontario Residency requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
