{"id":237,"date":"2012-11-22T14:47:33","date_gmt":"2012-11-22T19:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ses\/?page_id=237"},"modified":"2018-10-19T18:43:26","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T22:43:26","slug":"prinicples-of-timetabling","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ses\/timetabling-and-space-management\/prinicples-of-timetabling\/","title":{"rendered":"Principles of Timetabling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Timetabling<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Definition:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A coordination of people, courses and physical space, within a defined period of time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Principles:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An effective timetable involves adherence to the designated time scheme, meaning that:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">a)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: small;\">All courses held within the time period covered by the slot system should conform to the slot system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">b)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Instructors should honour the approved slot system by timely commencement and termination of classes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">c)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: small;\">All slots are considered equally in the timetabling process.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1. People<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a.\u00a0\u00a0 Instructor<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Definition:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All those individuals that are instructors of record for a course.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Principles:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The timetable must not conflict with an instructor\u2019s other teaching assignments.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Instructor requests relating to Carleton Human Rights Policy and Procedures will be accommodated up to the point of undue hardship to the University (Level 1).<strong>\u00a0 <em>Please refer any questions regarding Accommodation obligations to Equity Services, <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/equity\/index.htm\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">http:\/\/carleton.ca\/equity\/index.htm<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Instructors with disabilities shall be accommodated in timetable matters up to the point of undue hardship for the University.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: small;\">All timetabling arrangements for Instructors must conform to the terms of the applicable collective agreement.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To the extent to which it is possible and with the appropriate approvals, the pedagogical needs of a course, and the individual special circumstances of the instructor, should determine the type of time slot used or assigned. (see Academic Timetable Responsibilities \u2013 Chairs &amp; Directors)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">b.\u00a0\u00a0 Students<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Definition:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Individuals enrolled in a course for credit, part-time or full-time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Principles:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The timetable should optimize space utilization so that we maximize the space available in courses to meet student demand.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Students requiring special accommodations should be referred to the Paul Menton Centre at <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/pmc\/\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/pmc\/<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To the extent to which it is possible, the timetable should facilitate the widest range of program and course selection for all students.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: small;\">The timetable will provide a designated amount of time to move between classes.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">C.\u00a0\u00a0 Teaching Assistants<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Definition:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Individuals assigned as Teaching Assistants to a course.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <strong>Principles:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To the extent to which it is possible, the timetable should provide the ability for Teaching assistants to attend the undergraduate courses they are assigned to. In order to achieve this goal, selected graduate courses in which Teaching Assistants are likely to be enrolled in should be scheduled conflict free with the undergraduate courses.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.
