Dr. Cynthia Cruickshank joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering as an Assistant Professor in July 2009. She received her Ph.D. (2009) and B.A.Sc. (2003) degrees at Queen’s University. Her primary research interests involve the design and optimization of solar thermal energy systems and sensible heat storages. The scope of this work also includes investigations related to advanced buildings, including energy efficient and sustainable energy concepts for commercial and residential applications.
The SESL has helped Dr. Cruickshank in developing collaborative relationships with researchers at other Canadian universities, particularly those engaged in the NSERC Solar Buildings Research Network. As a researcher and participant in the NSERC Smart Net-Zero Energy Buildings Strategic Research Network (SneBRN), Dr. Cruickshank is exploring new collaborative arrangements and supporting graduate students. Since 2010, Dr. Cruickshank has also been an active member of the Canadian Home Builders Association Technical Research Committee, as the SneBRN representative.
Dr. Cruickshank has also been the recipient of a number of research awards, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Discovery Grant, Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund, Ontario Research Fund and Ontario Centres of Excellence Collaborative Research Grant. Dr. Cruickshank has authored or co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed papers on the topic of solar thermal energy and storage, and was the recipient of the Best Paper Award at the ASME International Solar Energy Conference in 2006.
