Specific-domain Hardware Design and Optimization Research Lab

Welcome to the Specific-domain Hardware Research Laboratory at Carleton University. Our team, led by Dr. Arash Ahmadi, works on making hardware simpler, faster, and more energy efficient. We take ideas from the human brain and nature to design better systems for artificial intelligence and everyday devices.

At SHaRe, we focus on practical research with real-world impact. Our work includes:

  • Neuromorphic Sensing and Computing: We build systems that mimic how the brain senses and processes information. These systems use simple signals (spikes) to quickly detect and respond to changes in light, sound, and touch.
  • AI-on-a-Chip: We develop small, powerful chips that run AI applications on the device itself. This helps in reducing delays and saving energy.
  • Memristor-Based Systems: By using memristors, devices that change resistance with past activity, we create hardware that can learn and store data in the same place.
  • Hardware Security and Trust: Our work ensures that the chips we design are secure against attacks. We use techniques like built-in cryptography and tamper-resistant designs.
  • Embedded Systems and Ambient Intelligence: We design systems that are embedded into everyday environments, making smart homes, wearable devices, and robots more efficient and responsive.
