Several recent Carleton journalism graduates were among the contributors who gathered at the Ottawa Citizen on Nov. 22 to celebrate the launch of an illustrated collection of essays titled Capital Builders: The Remarkable People Who Shaped Ottawa.
The School of Journalism and Communication was represented at the Nov. 22 launch of Capital Builders: The Remarkable People Who Shaped Ottawa by Prof. Randy Boswell and fellow contributors to the book (and Class of 2017 J-School graduates) Anna Desmarais, Patrick Butler and Jolson Lim.
Class of 2017 BJ alumni Anna Desmarais, Patrick Butler and Jolson Lim were on hand to mark the release of the Citizen’s flagship Canada 150 project, an illustrated volume of profiles of more than 40 men and women who played important roles in the early and modern history of Canada’s capital region.
Other J-School contributors to the book — a compendium of lengthy feature stories that had been published throughout the sesquicentennial year in the Citizen’s print and online editions — included Sabrina Nemis, Spencer Van Dyk (MJ ’17), Olivia Bowden (MJ ’17) and Gabrièle Roy (BJ ’17). Two other recent graduates who are now Citizen staff members, Alison Mah (MJ ’13) and Tyler Dawson (MJ ’13), also contributed essays to the volume, as did Citizen writer Matthew Pearson (MJ ’09), a part-time instructor at the School and this year’s Michener-Deacon Fellow for Journalism Education.
Prof. Randy Boswell, who also wrote for the book, spoke at the launch about the intersection of journalism and history, and the special place of the Citizen — Ottawa’s oldest continuously operated business — in preserving and showcasing the city’s past, and nurturing its sense of community.
