Carleton has sent more than 200 students from the School of Journalism and Communication abroad on media internships in the past decade. The first media internships took place through the Rwanda Initiative project and since 2009, the internship program has been administered by the Centre for Media and Transitional Societies, working together with partners in the field.
Through the 2019 CMTS Developing World Media Internship program, a total of 15 placements will be offered in 11 countries around the world in partnership with the Uniterra program of World University Service Canada.
Internships are on offer this year in Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Malawi, Nepal, Peru, Senegal,
Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam.

Our information session on the internships and application process will be held in the school’s Resource Centre on Wednesday, Jan. 16, beginning at 6 p.m.

Please read these instructions carefully. The application procedure is the following:
Open the application form online. It is a fillable PDF, so just fill in the blanks. Save a copy to your own computer with the file name CMTS2019.YOURLASTNAME
- Make sure the current copy of your CV has the file name CMTS.CV.YOURLASTNAME
- Email the completed application form, along with your current CV, to email@example.com
- Choose one referee from among your professors and instructors in the School of Journalism and Communication. Ask your referee to complete and email the CMTS referee form (all School of Journalism and Communication faculty members and contract instructors have the template copy) under the filename CMTS.YOURLASTNAME.REFERENCE
You will see in the application form below a space for you to type in a statement of intent, in 12-point-type and not exceeding one page. Outline briefly who you are and why you think you are well suited to a CMTS media internship. The statement of intent should also include a brief section describing the courses you have been taking at Carleton (your double major or concentration for example) and must also state your current Grade Point Average (GPA) obtained from your most recent academic audit at Carleton. Your referee should be a faculty member or sessional instructor in the School of Journalism and Communication who knows your work.
Eligibility and funding
The internship competition is open to students in the School of Journalism and Communication in both the undergrad and the graduate programs. Placements are usually 10 weeks in duration. Those selected to participate will receive a $3,000 travel scholarship. In addition, successful applicants will be required to submit a $1,500 deposit on acceptance of a placement. Those funds will be returned in the field in the form of a monthly living allowance.

Interviews will be conducted in February with decisions as early as late February or early March.
