Nana aba Duncan, the new Carty Chair in Journalism, Diversity and Inclusion Studies at Carleton’s journalism school, is delivering a keynote today at the 104th annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference.

Duncan will speak today at 10:00 a.m. as the keynote for the teaching panel Champions of Editing, Teaching and Research Competitions as part of a discussion of diversity, equity and inclusion across journalism and mass communication curriculum. Duncan will provide tips for individual educators and address systemic change.

The AEJMC is a non-profit organization comprised of educators, students and practitioners from around the globe. Their mission includes promoting “the highest possible standards for journalism and mass communication education” and encouraging “the implementation of a multi-cultural society in the classroom and curriculum.” The organization holds a conference each year. It features sessions on teaching, research and public service in the various components of journalism and mass communication.

This year’s event, Turning the Page: AEJMC Virtual Conference, has been unfolding online all week and wraps up tomorrow.

Duncan joined Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication as the Carty Chair in Journalism, Diversity and Inclusion Studies in July. One of her first tasks has been to work together with other journalism faculty members to look at how the program introduces students to diversity and equity issues in the curriculum. She is also designing a new course for third-year journalism students, Journalism and Belonging, that will help students become more inclusive and confronts how bias influences editorial decisions and career paths.

“As a Black woman who is a journalist, I see this position as a genuine effort towards change,” Duncan said when her appointment at Carleton was announced. “I also know the pressure that exists for one racialized person in such a role. This will take the continued effort of a whole team, and I’m excited to be part of it.”
