Journalism student Megan Costa and Prof. Brett Popplewell, head of the J-School’s Future of Journalism Initiative, were interviewed Jan. 21 for a CBC Ottawa Morning segment on They Were Loved, the COVID-19 obituary project. The project, a collaboration between Maclean‘s magazine and the FJI that involves hundreds of journalism students across Canada, was also featured this week in a Spotlight story at Carleton’s main website.
The FJI’s central role in the project has been made possible thanks to funding from the Giustra Foundation. Its generous financial contribution, which supported the creation of the FJI’s journalist-in-residence position occupied by Katherine Laidlaw, has allowed Katherine to build what’s believed to be the largest collection of names of Canadians lost to the COVID-19 pandemic — the database that underpins the obituary project.
