B.CoMS Graduate is recipient of Ottawa’s Forty Under 40. Carleton Communication and Media Studies Alumni, Kayla Isabelle, has been recognized as one of Ottawa’s Forty Under 40

Recipients of the 2022 Forty Under 40 award are top young business leaders recognized for their innovation, dedication, and community involvement . Organized by the Ottawa Board of Trade (OBOT) and Ottawa Business Journal (OBJ), it is one of the most distinguished business awards for young business leaders and spotlights Canada’s rising business stars.

Kayla Isabelle, CEO at Startup Canada, has dedicated her career to supporting entrepreneurs, and is passionate about leveraging the power of storytelling in the business community. Kayla led Startup Canada through a period of rapid growth and transformation; from serving entrepreneurs across 14 Canadian cities, to engaging 120,000+ entrepreneurs in 312 cities annually across eight flagship and digital programs with a focus on under-served or marginalized communities—her leadership has empowered Startup Canada to continue to create meaningful impact and support for Canada’s entrepreneurs.

Kayla attributes much of her leadership to experiences she had as an undergraduate student in Carleton’s Communication and Media Studies program. “The program elements and curriculum were obviously important given their emphasis on digital media, technology and culture, but so was the opportunity to develop my voice as a leader through extra-curricular activities.” Kayla is a former President of the Communications Undergraduate Society and used her time at Carleton to volunteer with local business associations, including the Canadian Public Relations Society and International Association of Business Communicators. “These volunteer experiences provided practical complements to my studies and helped me grow my professional network.”[GU1] In addition to her recognition as one of Ottawa’s Top Forty Under 40, Kayla has also been awarded the 2021 RevolutionHer™ “Impact in Leadership Award”, the 2021 Woman of Inspiration “Authentic Leader Award” by the Universal Women’s Network, “Best Business Support Organization” by CanadianSME Magazine, StartupBeat’s 20 Under 50 Female Leaders In Tech, and is an 11x Award Winning IABC Leader.
