Associate Professor Benjamin Woo was one of eight Carleton University professors recognized by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs for excellence in graduate student mentorship at a virtual reception held in March 2022.

Professor Woo is the director of the Research on Comics, Con Events and Transmedia Laboratory (RoCCET Lab). He is the author of Getting a Life: The Social Worlds of Geek Culture and co-editor of the recently released collection, The Comics World: Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and Their Publics. Professor Woo supervises students working in the areas of popular culture and media industries, fan and audience studies, comics studies, and subcultural theory.

Sponsored by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs and the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International), the Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award recognizes outstanding faculty members who provide exceptional guidance and support to graduate students as supervisors and research mentors. As the following quotes illustrate, Professor Woo has had a transformational impact on his graduate students.

“His door was always open. He was never impatient or exasperated, but always took the time to listen and consider what I had said. I was impressed by his knowledge; he seemed to have read everything and was excellent at suggesting relevant and interesting literature.”

“I am often struck by the fact that Ben seems to remember every detail of every conversation we have ever had. He is truly generous in both his academic and social approaches and I often feel grateful to him for his patience and kindness.”

“During a difficult year, Dr. Woo went above and beyond to organize seminars with ‘visiting’ scholars, readings groups, game nights, watch-parties, and even additional mentorship connections to provide each other with supplementary support.”

“At a time when inspiration was difficult to come by, Ben conjured the most inspirational environment at the RoCCET Lab, and navigated virtual learning smoothly and in unique ways.”
