About the Global Journalism Internships

Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication is relaunching its acclaimed Global Journalism Internship program for the spring and summer of 2023 after a suspension of three years caused by Covid.

This program is supported by the Reader’s Digest Foundation and Carleton University.

The Global Journalism Internships being planned for this year are the latest iteration of a program that has been in operation since 2006 and has sent more than 200 Carleton journalism students to the Global South to take up media internships and project Carleton’s values on the international stage. These internships have provided life-altering opportunities for many of our students as a capstone to their time at Carleton and have also built valuable connections for Carleton internationally.

This year’s program will include up to 9 funded internships of 12 weeks duration.

Six of the interns will take up placements with Farm Radio International in either Uganda or Ghana. Another three placements will be with the open-source investigation organization Bellingcat, at its headquarters in Amsterdam.

There will be $4,000 in total funding for successful applicants, which covers basic costs and provides some financial compensation.

Farm Radio International internships

Successful applicants for the six Farm Radio positions will receive $4,000 in funding from Carleton. They must deposit $3,000 directly with Farm Radio. Farm Radio will arrange and cover cost of: flights, accommodation, visas, local travel, insurance, 3-day pre-departure training in Ottawa. They will also reimburse for such medical expenses as vaccinations. Interns will also receive a $500 per month cost-of-living stipend in the field.

Interns will join the Farm Radio project building a podcast that showcases the “nature-based solutions” being practiced by African communities. Interns will collect and produce the stories that will be featured in that podcast as well as accompanying companion multimedia pieces.

Bellingcat internships

Through a pilot project this year, Bellingcat will host three interns from Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication. Successful applicants will receive $4,000 in funding but will be responsible for their own costs for travel and accommodation.

Bellingcat is a collective of researchers, investigators and citizen journalists using open-source research methods to probe a wide range of subjects, from wildlife smuggling and far-right groups, to documenting potential war crimes and crimes against humanity. Bellingcat operates in a unique field where advanced technology, research methods, forensic research, journalism, transparency and accountability all come together.

Bellingcat Summer Fellows can expect to work on a wide range of issues, from documenting harm against civilians in Ukraine, to uncovering disinformation operations online.

Bellingcat Summer Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their own research projects, and/or explore ongoing projects with which they may be able to assist other Bellingcat researchers. Bellingcat is looking for interns with an ability to work independently and with little supervision. Throughout the fellowship, the Bellingcat Summer Fellows will meet with a Bellingcat staff member who will act as their supervisor. During these meetings, the Bellingcat Summer Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their own research projects, and/or explore ongoing projects with which they may be able to assist other Bellingcat researchers.
