The Communication and Media Studies anti-racism committee invites you to participate in a virtual panel discussion with Dr. Wendy Willems on April 25, 11:00am (EDT).  Dr. Willems is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Media and Communications Department at The London School of Economics and Political Science. Her work engages decolonial and postcolonial approaches to media and communication studies, global digital culture, and social change.

Students and faculty interested in participating are asked to read Dr. Willems’ piece titled “The Reproduction of Canonical Silences: Re-reading Habermas in the Context of Slavery and the Slave Trade,” ahead of the event to engage actively in the discussion. The article examines the conditions that allowed for the formation of the public sphere as theorized by Jürgen Habermas. The concept of the public sphere has been influential in the ways in which the fields of communication and media studies understand public spaces. Dr. Willems offers a different approach to understanding the concept of the public sphere by situating it within a historical context often overlooked in its conceptualization, and which has had implications in how “publics” are imagined.
