Sarina McGillivray
MA Student
Biography
Sarina (she/her) completed her Honours Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies from Carleton University and has been working in the RoCCET Lab, with Professor Benjamin Woo, as a research assistant. In 2020, she presented her research on post-object fandom on the undergraduate panel at the Communication Graduate Caucus Conference. She is also a recipient of a SSHRC CGS-M.
Her research interests include the representation of women in media (specifically older women and older women of colour), how social media portrays counter-narratives to gender norms, intersectionality, ageism in media, and anything to do with constructions of gender and sexuality in media. Her research has been influenced by the theorists Michele Foucault, Judith Butler, Rosalind Gill, and Sarah Banet-Weiser.
In her spare time, Sarina loves a good cup of Earl Grey, watercolour painting, and becoming enthralled by a Real Housewives series or any new reality show she can find.
