Trevor Smith

Biography

Trevor Smith holds a PhD in Theory and Criticism from the University of Western Ontario, an MA in Political Economy from Carleton University, a BA in Political Science from Carleton University, and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Ottawa. In addition to teaching at Carleton, he works in the Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division at Statistics Canada on census subject matter.

His research focuses on digital politics, including how people communicate politically online and how political space is constructed and governed on the internet. His current project examines public relevance algorithms and human moderation through the lens of democratic theory in order to evaluate how online political spaces are dealing with the threat of trolls, fake news, bots, and other forms of disruptive online activity.
