André Sponder

André is a professionally licensed engineer that plans to use her experience in science and technology and her love of telling stories and educating to pursue a career in science media.  Originally from Ottawa, André did her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa and is excited to continue her education in her hometown at Carleton University. Her experience in a variety of careers has developed both her written and oral communication skills.  Before working as a Transportation Engineer, André worked at the Canada Museum of Science and Technology as an school educator and at Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo as an outreach educator, teaching science to wondering minds from age 6 to 60.

André believes the need for journalists who have science and engineering backgrounds is important in reporting on science topics.  Technical details can be complex and hard to understand and are sometimes misconstrued in the media.  André has experience writing about technical subject matter for the general population through her engineering experience and also worked at the Science Media Centre of Canada, which connects journalists to a database of science experts to provide technically accurate sources.  André is excited to delve into the world of journalism and further develop her skills as a writer and storyteller through the Masters of Journalism program at Carleton University.
