Biography

Rainie Wang holds a BA in Communications (major) and Publishing (minor program) from Simon Fraser University, and a MA (awarded with distinction) in International Journalism from University of Leeds (UK). She then came to Ottawa in 2016 for her PhD study in Communication at Carlton University. After finishing her PhD courses and first Comp in 2017, she started to work in Toronto, and do her research at the same time. Rainie’s MA thesis investigates the democratic potential of Chinese social media, particularly Weibo, in representing the voice of lower working class in contemporary China. She researches on the same topic in her PhD study, and looks specifically at how the class nature of online public sphere shapes its democratic potential. Rainie is also a freelance Chinese online TV station presenter since 2014, and has her own YouTube Channel since then.
