Yes and no,\u201d she said. \u201cBy me telling you the story of <em>Seven Fallen Feathers<\/em>, I\u2019m going to talk about how we tell stories, how we hope you see our stories, and how we hope you see that we\u2019re all people at the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talaga, of mixed Polish and Anishinaabe descent, studied Canadian politics and history at the University of Toronto, where she volunteered at Victoria College\u2019s <em>The Strand<\/em> and wrote and edited the campus newspaper <em>The Varsity<\/em>. She was hired as an intern at the <em>Toronto Star<\/em> in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you start in any print newsroom, you do everything,\u201d she said. \u201cYou get thrown in. It\u2019s a sink or swim newsroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She covered many beats in her 14 years as a general city reporter before joining the <em>Star<\/em>\u2018s Queen\u2019s Park Bureau in 2009. Two years later, she pitched a story in the hopes of covering the federal election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to do a story on why it is Indigenous people don\u2019t vote historically in elections,\u201d she told her editor, knowing she would report on the fact that status Indians didn\u2019t receive the right to vote until 1960.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11138\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd-1200x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd-1200x680.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd-1200x680-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd-1200x680-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd-1200x680-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd-1200x680-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">The Disappearance of Jordan Wabasse<\/h2>\n<p>The story took her to Thunder Bay, Ont., where Stan Beardy, then grand chief of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nan.on.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nishnawbe Aski Nation<\/a> (NAN), asked her if she knew about the disappearance of a boy named Jordan Wabasse. He had been missing for 70 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said to me that Jordan was the seventh student to go missing or to die in Thunder Bay since 2000,\u201d she said. \u201cI was ashamed as an Anishinaabe woman, that I didn\u2019t know this story and that I wasn\u2019t writing about this story. I was ashamed as a journalist. Where were the satellite trucks? How come they weren\u2019t doing stories on these kids?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To the <em>Star<\/em>\u2018s credit, she said, they told her to drop her original pitch and take up the assignment of the disappearing youths. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2011\/05\/08\/seven_native_teens_dead_or_missing_while_away_at_school.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Her piece<\/a> ran on the front page on May 9, 2011. Jordan\u2019s body was found the next day.<\/p>\n<p>At the Ontario legislature, Talaga began to ask politicians about Thunder Bay, about why children had to leave their homes and communities to get a high school education or basic health care, about the lack of a provincial inquest into the seven deaths.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt became something I couldn\u2019t let go,\u201d she said. \u201cYou know, sometimes stories find you . . . \u00a0I knew that in some ways I couldn\u2019t tell the story I wanted to tell in newspaper articles.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From the mid-1880s to 1996, approximately 150,000 Inuit, M\u00e9tis and First Nations children were taken from their families, culture and communities in an attempt to assimilate Indigenous people. They were sent away to church-run, government-funded residential schools -139 of them across the country.<\/p>\n<p>In October 1966, Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old from Marten Falls First Nation, escaped the harsh conditions at Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School and tried to walk home by following the train tracks. He was found dead near Reddit, Ont., still hundreds of kilometres away from home. A coroner\u2019s inquest into his death played a significant part in dismantling the residential school system.<\/p>\n<p>But even in 2019, said Talaga, children are forced to move away from home, to cities like Thunder Bay, Sioux Lookout, Timmins, and even Ottawa, just to go to high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about that. It\u2019s something, of course, that I think about all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11139\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-students-1200x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-students-1200x680.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-students-1200x680-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-students-1200x680-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-students-1200x680-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-students-1200x680-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">On Not Being a Story Taker<\/h2>\n<p>To the journalism students in the room, she passed along a piece of advice from CBC\u2019s Duncan McCue: don\u2019t be a story taker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t just go smashing into a community or into a family and take that story, run away, and just never talk to them again,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can\u2019t do that. That\u2019s not just for dealing with First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis families. I would say it\u2019s probably good human practice for anybody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you take the time to actually get to know the family and the community, that comes back to you in many different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recounted how Kyle Morrisseau\u2019s father Christian\u2014the youngest son of renowned Woodland artist Norval Morrisseau and a successful painter in his own right\u2014contributed beyond just telling his son\u2019s story.<\/p>\n<p>Once the coroner\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca\/english\/Deathinvestigations\/Inquests\/Verdictsandrecommendations\/OCCVerdictsSevenFirstNationsYouths.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inquest<\/a> into the seven deaths concluded on June 28, 2016 after eight months of investigation, Christian painted a canvas. Its title, \u201cSeven Fallen Feathers,\u201d not only gave her debut book its name and cover image, it also changed the national conversation about Jethro, Curran, Paul, Robyn, Reggie, Jordan, and Kyle.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHe said: \u2018I\u2019m sick and tired of listening to the journalists and to the lawyers, the police, and everybody calling the kids the seven dead students. It\u2019s so demeaning.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThese kids, they all have families that love them. They come from communities that love them, they all had possibility. They all had lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talaga\u2019s work on <em>Seven Fallen Feathers <\/em>led her to the 2017Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy and she became the 2018 CBC Massey Lecturer. Her next book, <a href=\"https:\/\/houseofanansi.com\/products\/all-our-relations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>All Our Relations: Finding The Path Forward<\/em><\/a>, chronicled brutal realities for Indigenous peoples throughout the world, from Canada to Australia and Brazil, from Norway to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the leading causes of death for First Nations youth and adults up to the age of 44 are self-inflicted injuries and suicide. Each year, one third of all deaths among Indigenous Canadian youth are by their own hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who do not live in an Indigenous community cannot really grasp what it is like to grow up in an environment where suicide is the norm, where it is a part of everyday existence,\u201d she wrote in <em>All Our Relations<\/em>. \u201cFor too many of these communities worldwide, life is lived immersed in the normalcy of death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11140\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd2-1200x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd2-1200x680.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd2-1200x680-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd2-1200x680-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd2-1200x680-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/tanya-talaga-crowd2-1200x680-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">Finding the Path Forward<\/h2>\n<p>Finding the path forward includes the efforts of many communities: recommendations abound from reports like 2014\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mushkegowuk.com\/documents\/dec2014_peoplesinquiryreport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The People\u2019s Inquiry into Our Suicide Pandemic<\/em><\/a>, the 2016 update to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itk.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ITK-National-Inuit-Suicide-Prevention-Strategy-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy<\/em><\/a>, and 2018\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/SFNSPS-FINAL-2018-May-24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Saskatchewan First Nations Suicide Prevention Strategy<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Childhood development features prominently in many of the recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it take to raise healthy children? This is not rocket science,\u201d said Talaga. \u201cThings like clean water, running sewers, safe housing that\u2019s not mouldy, having parents or someone who loves you that tucks you in at night and tells you that you matter, that you\u2019re going to be somebody someday . . . \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nutrition, basic and specialized health care and education are essential. But they are lacking, she says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe determinants of health are completely missing in many of our communities. How can this be, in this day and age?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In conversation after the lecture with <a href=\"https:\/\/aptn.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APTN<\/a>\u2018s Francine Compton, Talaga touched on the responsibilities of journalists and took questions from the audience. Among them was a query about what the average Canadian can do to help.<\/p>\n<p>Compton said: \u201cKnow the history, pass that knowledge on to your children and the people you are associated with, and call on the government to make change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/nctr.ca\/assets\/reports\/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">94 Calls to Action<\/a>,\u201d said Talaga. \u201cRead them and see how you can change things\u2014how you can apply one of those to your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n"}],"text_columns_background":"white","custom_block_title":"story and
