Courses will be taught primarily online, bolstered by in-person intensives at a central location.<\/p>\n<p>The School is collaborating with two of Ontario\u2019s Indigenous Institutes \u2013 First Nations Technical Institute and Kenjgewin Teg \u2013 to develop a braided learning experience, ensuring every learner has adequate social and cultural support for successful completion of the JIICC.<\/p>\n<p>The CJIIC will offer a suite of Carleton University micro-credentials, which may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fundamental skills of reporting<\/li>\n<li>Writing for media<\/li>\n<li>Audio storytelling<\/li>\n<li>Visual storytelling<\/li>\n<li>Entrepreneurial journalism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Indigenous pedagogy will be central to course design, with an emphasis on experiential learning. The Algonquins of Pikw\u00e0kanag\u00e0n First Nation, the Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne, and Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation are all supporting the course as community partners.<\/p>\n<p>Students are responsible for researching and producing an enterprise news story with multimedia elements. He was the driving force behind <i>Kuper\u00a0Island<\/i>, an award-winning eight-part podcast series on residential schools. In addition to hosting CBC Radio One\u2019s <i>Cross Country Checkup<\/i>\u00a0and <i>Helluva\u00a0Story<\/i>, he was a longstanding correspondent for CBC-TV\u2019s flagship news show, <i>The National<\/i>. McCue continues to maintain\u00a0an association with CBC since joining Carleton.<\/p>\n<p>McCue comes to Carleton with extensive experience as an educator, having taught journalism and created courses at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism and Toronto Metropolitan University and also\u00a0as a visiting fellow at Carleton.\u00a0In 2023, the Canadian Association of Journalists presented McCue with its highest honour, the Charles Bury Award, for his \u201cefforts to inspire change in how Canadian journalism covers Indigenous stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the years he developed a unique online resource, Reporting in Indigenous Communities, which inspired his latest work, a new textbook called <i>Decolonizing Journalism: A Guide to Reporting in Indigenous Communities.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">McCue is Anishinaabe, a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation in southern Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n"}],"text_columns_background":"grey","custom_block_title":"Journalism Through an Indigenous Lens"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_columns","add_icons":"no","columns":[{"column_title":"Indigenous Initiatives at Carleton","icon_list":false,"column_content":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carleton University is situated within the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin people and supports First Nations, M\u00e9tis\u00a0and Inuit students from across Canada.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Following the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission\u2019s Final Report in 2015, many post-secondary institutions worked to revitalize, support\u00a0and bring Indigenous learners and Indigenous knowledges into classrooms. In October 2018, Carleton joined this collective movement and formed the Carleton University Strategic Indigenous Initiatives Committee (CUSIIC), which published the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kinamagwin-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-loopstyle=\"linkonly\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin\u00a0Report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in 2020.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559738":0,"335559739":0,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0includes 41 Carleton-specific Calls to Action that encompass an overarching goal of making the Carleton campus a safer space for current and future Indigenous students, staff\u00a0and faculty members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559738":0,"335559739":0,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In 2022, Carleton issued the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenousinitiatives\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kinamagwin-Progress-Report-May-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-loopstyle=\"linkonly\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin Progress Report,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0showcasing\u00a0a monumental collective effort across the university to further the goals of the initial\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0report. These actions have been complemented by a $2.5 mil\u00adlion donation from the Joyce Family Foundation\u2014matched by an additional\u00a0$2.5 million from the university\u2014which has al\u00adlowed us to mobilize many of our intentions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559738":0,"335559739":0,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This progress report reinforces our commitment to continuing to make progress on the work that remains\u00a0to be done.
