The School\u2019s Journalism Awards Committee meets in May each year to select the award candidates. All students eligible for a particular award are considered by the Committee.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"1\"><\/a>Andrew McIntosh Award in Investigative Enterprise<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually, by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, to a graduate student in the Masters of Journalism program who has achieved the highest final grade in any of the first-year graduate reporting and research methods courses including: Reporting Methods (JOUR 5206) and Public Affairs Reporting (JOUR 5208.) The highest final grade will be as calculated at the end of the recipient&#8217;s first year. The recipient will be selected by the Director of the School of Journalism and Communication on the recommendation of the Supervisor of Graduate Studies (Journalism).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"2\"><\/a>Christoph Lehmann-Halens Memorial Award<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Master of Journalism degree. While good academic standing is an important consideration, demonstrated interest and commitment to the issues of disarmament and\/or environmental protection and\/or feminist concerns is the main criteria for selection. The recipient will be chosen each year on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Journalism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"gaia\"><\/a>Gaia Power&#8217;s Samit Sharma Journalism Scholarship<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Director or Associate Director of the School of Journalism and Communication to outstanding graduate students entering or continuing in a Journalism degree. Preference will be given to recipients who exhibit leadership that furthers social goals of civil society in Canada and beyond. Endowed in 2023 by Gaia Power Inc. for its founder, Samit Sharma.<br \/>\nThis scholarship was established in honour and appreciation of Canada\u2019s rule based civil society that requires its five pillars of Judiciary, Legislature, Executive, Public Service and Journalism, not to serve any party or person but the country, its residents and its democratic institutions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"3\"><\/a>Joe O\u2019Donnell Memorial Scholarship in Journalism<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually to an outstanding student enrolled in the Master of Journalism program. The scholarship is intended to support experienced journalists undertaking thesis research toward a graduate degree. Pertinence to Canada in the proposed study will be a consideration awarding the scholarship. The Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will select the recipient upon the recommendation of the Director of the School of Journalism and Communication. Over the course of his long and distinguished career in Canadian journalism, Joe O&#8217;Donnell was a reporter and columnist for several major news organizations including the Ottawa Sun, the Toronto Sun and the Toronto Star. For many years he was a member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery and he was also former president of the National Press Club in Ottawa. Established in 2003 by family, friends and colleagues of the late Joe O&#8217;Donnell who died on August 7, 1997.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"23\"><\/a>Joe Scanlon Reporting Fund<\/h3>\n<p>The purpose of the Joe Scanlon Reporting Fund is to provide support and encouragement for Journalism students who are undertaking experiential learning through investigative reporting projects. These projects would preferentially examine journalistic standards of source transparency and possible conflicts of public interest with respect to reportage and other public affairs platforms afforded by the news media to lobbyists, political strategists and communications advisors and\/or the news media\u2019s duty to ensure integrity and trust in democratic discourse and public policy. The fund will also support students\u2019 efforts to successfully publish their related work in Canadian print media.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"19\"><\/a>John Bird Memorial Scholarship<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Journalism and Communication, to a graduating student in the Bachelor or Master of Journalism program who has shown the ability and high standards required for objective, carefully researched and responsible reporting. Donor: Estate of Florence Bird. Endowed 1999.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"4\"><\/a>Martin Newland Award in News Reporting<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually, by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, to the graduate student in the Masters of Journalism program who has achieved the highest final grade in the Print Journalism Laboratory (course # JOUR 5200). The highest final grade will be as calculated at the end of the recipient&#8217;s first year. Funded by a bequest from the estate of Murray Goldblatt, who shared his experience and passion for the media as a professor at Carleton for 19 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"6\"><\/a>Peter Buckley Scholarship in Journalism<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Journalism and Communications two awards of equal value for outstanding undergraduate or graduate students proceeding from one year to another in the Bachelor of Journalism or the Master of Journalism program at Carleton University. One award shall be for excellence in writing and one award for superiority in editing. Endowed 2007 by PROUD FM.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"8\"><\/a>Rachael Elizabeth Edwards Memorial Award<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the School of Journalism and Communication, to an outstanding student completing the first year of the Master of Journalism program. Preference will be given to a female student who has indicated an interest in pursuing a career in the daily newspaper field. Endowed in 1974 in memory of Rachael Elizabeth Edwards, a former student in the School of Journalism and Communication. Revised in 1987.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"20\"><\/a>Robert Ellsworth Barry Scholarship<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, on the recommendation of the Director or Associate Director of the School of Journalism and Communication, to an outstanding graduate student pursuing a Master of Journalism degree who is undertaking a Master\u2019s Research Project (MRP). This award is intended to fund travel and research expenses related to the recipient\u2019s MRP. Endowed in 2019 by Marilyn Dimeo in loving memory of her brother, Robert Ellsworth Barry BJ\/64.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"10\"><\/a>Rogers Communications Award in Television Journalism<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually on the recommendation of the School of Journalism and Communication to the student graduating from the Master of Journalism program who shows the most promise as a television journalist. Endowed in 1991 by Rogers Ottawa Ltd.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"22\"><\/a>Terry Hargreaves Memorial Scholarship<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Director or Associate Director of the School of Journalism and Communication to outstanding graduate students entering or continuing in a Masters of Journalism program within the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University. Eligible recipients will demonstrate interest in combining investigative reporting in Canadian and international affairs with innovative forms of storytelling, including digital ones. Endowed in 2019 by friends, family and colleagues in memory of CBC reporter Terry Hargreaves (1936-2019) to extend his passion for journalism and public affairs to new generations of Canadian journalists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"11\"><\/a>Tim Ralfe Memorial Scholarship in Journalism<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Journalism and Communication to an outstanding student who is proceeding from first to second year in the Master of Journalism program. Preference will be given to a student who shows great promise as a future journalist, and demonstrates an interest in the field of Canadian public\/political affairs. Eligible recipients will be conducting a study-related project in a developing country or countries during his\/her second year. Application is required and applications must include a detailed statement of interest, official transcripts and a research proposal describing the applicant&#8217;s travel project component. Statements of interest and research proposals should not exceed 4 pages in length. Request for additional information should be directed to the Director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs or the Director of the School of Journalism and Communication. The Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will make the final selection. Endowed in 2002 by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Bill McWhinney (1939-2001) in recognition of the generous contribution of Bill McWhinney in furthering the understanding and connections of Canadians to the developing world. Revised 2008.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"a19\"><\/a>Diane King Stuemer Award<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Journalism and Communication, to an outstanding student to assist in the costs of travel and\/or research. Undergraduate recipients will be working on a major project for a senior reporting course. Graduate recipients will be working on as Master\u2019s research project or thesis. Recipients may be granted an opportunity to have a story based on their research and reporting published in the Ottawa Citizen. Established in 2014 with the support of Frank and Jeanette King in memory of Diane King Stuemer, BJ\/81.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"13\"><\/a>G. Stuart Adam Graduate Award in Journalism<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, on the recommendation of the Director or Associate Director of the School of Journalism and Communication, to an outstanding graduate student pursuing a Master of Journalism degree who is undertaking a Master&#8217;s Research Project (MRP). Eligible recipients will be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person). This award is intended to fund travel and research expenses related to the recipient&#8217;s MRP.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"14\"><\/a>Graduate Award in Political Reporting<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Director or Associate Director of the School of Journalism and Communication to a graduate student completing a Master&#8217;s Research Project in political reporting. Eligible recipients will complete a substantial piece of public affairs journalism that critically examines current affairs. Established in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"15\"><\/a>Harold A. Morrison Fellowship<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, to one or more graduate students to underwrite research costs associated with a major piece of public affairs journalism in the print media. Department nominations for this award must include a statement from the student describing their research. Endowed in 1997 in memory of the late Harold A. Morrison, the first graduate of the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"16\"><\/a>Peter Stursberg Award in Conflict Journalism and Media Studies<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, on the recommendation of the Director or Associate Director of the School of Journalism and Communication, to outstanding graduate students enrolled in a Master of Journalism degree undertaking a Thesis or Master\u2019s Research Project on a subject related to human conflict, the media and conflict studies, or conflict resolution, reconciliation or reconstruction. The award is intended to underwrite research and\/or travel costs associated with realizing the project. Application is required and must include a research proposal and detailed budget of proposed expenses. Contact <a href=\"mailto:mariela.lamont@carleton.ca\">Mariela Lamont<\/a>, Journalism Graduate Administrator for further information.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"17\"><\/a>Canada Graduate Scholarship-Master\u2019s (CGS M)\/SSHRC<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting Domestic students (Canadian and permanent residents of Canada)who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The Tri-council allocates CGS M awards to universities specifying the number of awards that each may offer to their students annually. The awards can only be offered to students pursuing graduate studies at eligible Canadian universities and the award must be held at the university that has made the offer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#pagetop\">^ Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"18\"><\/a>The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)<\/h3>\n<p>Awarded annually, this Program recognizes academic excellence in graduate studies at the master&#8217;s and doctoral levels in all disciplines of academic study.
