{"id":10770,"date":"2019-04-05T14:04:28","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T18:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/?p=10770"},"modified":"2019-04-05T14:04:28","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T18:04:28","slug":"mj-students-receive-awards-funding-for-field-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2019\/mj-students-receive-awards-funding-for-field-work\/","title":{"rendered":"MJ students receive awards, funding for field work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six Master of Journalism students will be travelling to five different continents to conduct fieldwork for their Master\u2019s Research Projects, supported by more than $35,000 in funds from the School\u2019s major internal awards.\u00a0 They will be producing stories on topics ranging from the experience of refugees fleeing war-torn regions to environmental activism in Chile and Southeast Asia; from the harmful role of education policy toward Indigenous peoples to the radicalization of youth in the best-educated state in India.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8902\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sponder-andre.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sponder-andre.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sponder-andre-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <strong>Bill McWhinney <\/strong>award is named after the late CEO of the Canadian International Development Agency and supports work related to international development issues.\u00a0 This year\u2019s winner is <strong>Andr\u00e9 Sponder<\/strong>, a licensed civil engineer who has worked at the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology as a school educator.\u00a0 She will be examining the export of plastic recyclables from Canada to Southeast Asia, and efforts by environmentalists to improve plastic recycling conditions in these countries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-10771\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/david-lochead-e1554482304786-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>The <strong>Diane King Stuemer <\/strong>award is named after a 1981 graduate of the School who documented her family\u2019s four-year travels around the world in a 42-foot ketch, the Northern Magic, in a series of dispatches for the <em>Ottawa Citizen <\/em>and in a subsequent book. \u00a0The award is intended to allow a student to explore the world beyond Canada\u2019s borders.\u00a0 This year\u2019s winner is <strong>David Lochead<\/strong>, who holds a B.A. in International Development from Dalhousie University and has worked with the Broadbent Institute.\u00a0 He will be documenting the efforts of activists to persuade the government of Chile to address the effects of climate change, which have already made themselves felt in elongated droughts and unusual periods of rainfall in the South American nation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9148\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/alhmidi-maan-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/alhmidi-maan-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/alhmidi-maan-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/alhmidi-maan-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/alhmidi-maan.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <strong>Harold A. Morrison <\/strong>award is named for one of the first graduates of the Journalism program at Carleton who went on to become Canadian Press bureau chief in Washington and London.\u00a0 The winner is <strong>Maan Alhmidi<\/strong>, who was a law student in Syria in 2011 when he took up the cause for regime change and was arrested by military intelligence for his writing and activism.\u00a0 After his release, he first moved to Turkey, from where he served as political section editor for the London-based news organization <em>Al-Araby al-Jadeed<\/em>, and then migrated to Canada.\u00a0 He will be assessing the successes and weaknesses of the Canadian government\u2019s Syrian Refugee Initiative, through which some 60,000 Syrians have settled in the country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-8905\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/varma-niranjalli-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/varma-niranjalli.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/varma-niranjalli-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <strong>Peter Stursberg <\/strong>award is named for the legendary CBC Second World War correspondent who was also one of the first anchors of the CTV National News.\u00a0 The award supports journalistic work on war, conflict, and reconciliation.\u00a0 The winner is <strong>Niranjalli Varma<\/strong>, who holds an M.A. in Mass Communication and Journalism from Mangalore University, India.\u00a0 She will travel to Kerala, India \u2013 the best-educated and most diverse state in the country \u2013 to investigate why it has proven to be fertile recruiting territory for Islamic extremist groups, including ISIS.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9479\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/menaka-raman-wilms_300x300_acf_cropped-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/menaka-raman-wilms_300x300_acf_cropped.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/menaka-raman-wilms_300x300_acf_cropped-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <strong>G. Stuart Adam <\/strong>award is named after a graduate of the School who went on to become its Director, then Dean of Arts, then Provost of the university.\u00a0 The winner is <strong>Menaka Raman-Wilms<\/strong>, who holds an M.A. in English (Creative Writing) from the University of Toronto.\u00a0 She will document the experience of young refugees who arrived in Berlin in 2015 without a parent or guardian, displaced by conflict in the Middle East.\u00a0 Some 42,000 such refugees arrived in Germany in that single year, the vast majority of them boys and young men.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9145\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcmillan-dexter_300x300_acf_cropped-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcmillan-dexter_300x300_acf_cropped.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcmillan-dexter_300x300_acf_cropped-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <strong>Political Reporting <\/strong>award has been won by <strong>Dexter McMillan<\/strong>, who holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of British Columbia and has worked in heath care management in East Vancouver.\u00a0 He will conduct a comparison of the Canadian Indian Act and the South African Bantu Education Act, examining the intent and effects of both education policies for Indigenous peoples, and the prospects for
