A standout student with infectious enthusiasm. This\u00a0is how Gabbi Van Looyen, recently graduated Bachelor of Journalism student, has been described.<\/p>\n
Van Looyen accepted her degree at convocation on Nov. 9, where she was also awarded the University Medal.<\/p>\n
“I am very pleased and grateful to have been awarded this medal,” said Van Looyen.<\/p>\n

This award is presented annually to the graduating students standing highest in architectural studies, arts, cognitive science, commerce, communication and media studies, computer science, economics, engineering, global and international studies, health sciences, humanities, industrial design, information technology, international business, journalism, journalism and humanities, mathematics, music, public affairs and policy management, science, and social work.<\/p>\n
“We’re extremely proud of Gabbi, and it was so gratifying to see her honoured at the Fall convocation ceremony,” said Associate Professor Randy Boswell, supervisor of undergraduate studies in journalism. “To achieve the highest academic standing amongst one’s peers in the journalism program is particularly noteworthy given the outstanding records of so many of our students.”<\/p>\n
Boswell added: “I had the pleasure of teaching Gabbi and was always impressed by her excellent work on assignments and her infectious enthusiasm in class. She was a standout student, and that is certainly reflected in Carleton awarding her the University Medal.”<\/p>\n
During her studies, Van Looyen worked for the Charlatan, Carleton’s independent newspaper. She is now working in marketing and communications in Kitchener.<\/p>\n
