It was published as the May cover story in the Walrus.<\/p>\n<p>Ansari is a freelance journalist based in Berlin whose work has appeared in publications including, <em>the Guardian<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0<em>Maclean&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0<em>VICE<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0<em>Refinery29<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0<em>Policy Options<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0<em>Chatelaine<\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0<em>Toronto Star<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Globe and Mail<\/em> . She was announced as one of the R. James Travers Fellowship winners in April of last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Fellowship, named after legendary journalist Jim Travers, was created to help finance a significant foreign reporting project by a Canadian journalist working in any medium. It provides an annual award of up to $25,000 to cover travel, research and reporting expenses and a stipend for a journalist.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18041\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Walrus-400x178.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Walrus-400x178.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Walrus-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Walrus-768x343.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Walrus-700x312.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Walrus.jpg 1347w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational reporting that is heavily research-based is increasingly difficult to fund, and I&#8217;m so grateful to have the opportunity to pursue a story with implications for an urgent policy debate in Canada,\u201d Ansari said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2021\/carleton-university-announces-2020-travers-journalism-fellowship-recipients-sadiya-ansari-and-alex-boyd\/\">Carleton Newsroom article<\/a>. \u201cThe support I&#8217;m receiving through the Travers Fellowship is also particularly meaningful for me as a freelancer, because there are so few opportunities that allow me to take on major projects like this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ansari&#8217;s is hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/2155292377956536\/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%2252%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%22invite_link_id%5C%22%3A489282299549783%7D%7D]%22%7D\">roundtable<\/a> to discuss her story on Apr. 21.
