{"id":18322,"date":"2022-05-11T12:44:27","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T16:44:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/?p=18322"},"modified":"2022-05-11T12:44:27","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T16:44:27","slug":"the-school-of-journalism-and-communication-congratulates-dr-nasreen-rajani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2022\/the-school-of-journalism-and-communication-congratulates-dr-nasreen-rajani\/","title":{"rendered":"The School of Journalism and Communication congratulates Dr. Nasreen Rajani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The School of Journalism and Communication congratulates Dr. Nasreen Rajani on the successful defence of her PhD dissertation, \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our experiences are different\u2026 our risks are different&#8217;: Racialized women\u2019s online activism to end violence against women in Canada.\u201d Nasreen successfully defended her dissertation on April 29, 2022.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nasreen\u2019s dissertation asks, \u201cwhy and how do racialized women in Canada participate in online activism to end violence against women?\u201d Grounded in a theoretical framework exploring how race, gender, sexuality, and disability shape approaches to online activism, and based on interviews with online activist women in Canada, the study places intersectional experiences of combatting violence at the foreground of analysis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis research came from a place of frustration,\u201d Nasreen explains. \u201cSo much of the scholarship in this area suffers from excessive optimism or pessimism about online activism and efforts to end violence against women.\u201d She also argues that much of the scholarship in this area overlooks the complex ways that differences in identity (race, gender, sexuality, (dis)ability) shape opportunities to advocate and effect change.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As someone who was involved in anti-violence activism as a volunteer for many years, Nasreen wanted to add to this literature by confronting its dominant frame. \u201cThere is far more to anti-violence activism than the experiences of white women feminists in the United States,\u201d she argues.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2}\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18323 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/D13EF86C-5B20-46D6-8BC8-4C9639307C5C-400x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/D13EF86C-5B20-46D6-8BC8-4C9639307C5C-400x400.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/D13EF86C-5B20-46D6-8BC8-4C9639307C5C-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/D13EF86C-5B20-46D6-8BC8-4C9639307C5C-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/D13EF86C-5B20-46D6-8BC8-4C9639307C5C.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nasreen\u2019s research is a call for empirically grounded, ethically responsible approaches to online media activism that emphasizes the voices of women.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn doing this research it was important to listen directly to women, and to learn about their experiences in online anti-violence activism. These women are mobilizing and creating a variety of digital media technologies, from personal websites to social media pages, to podcasts and more, all which draw attention to the intersectional nature of the violence they experience.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Rena Bivens, who supervised the dissertation, says the study offered \u201cgreat context and a depth of analysis\u201d to help us better understand what it means to be a racialized woman working within Canada\u2019s violence against women movement, and how necessary it is to create additional networks of support.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNasreen\u2019s research demonstrates the importance of private spheres within social media platforms to facilitate space for racialized women to support one another in this challenging work,\u201d Bivens says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bivens also notes that a major contribution of Nasreen\u2019s research is how it \u201cexpands our theoretical approach\u201d to the study of violence. \u201cHer intersectional analysis shows that the traffic of violence flows in multiple directions, infiltrating the wider media environment, the relationship between non-profit organizations and the settler colonial state, and the social media platforms where so much of this work is conducted.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Yasmin Jiwani, Concordia University Research Chair in Intersectionality, Violence and Resistance, whose own work focuses on the intersecting influences of race and gender in shaping how media portray violence against marginalized women, was Nasreen\u2019s external examiner. In her report to the university, Jiwani noted the important ways in which Nasreen shifted analytical attention from the \u201cwhat\u201d of digital media activism on ending violence against women, to emphasizing questions of \u201chow\u201d and \u201cwhy\u201d racialized women do this important work. Jiwani found the dissertation \u201cextremely well-written and well-organized\u201d and noted that it makes a \u201ccompelling argument\u201d about racialized women\u2019s online activism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cRajani\u2019s methodological approach was rigorous, her overview of the theoretical literature was robust, and she presented a thorough account of the ethical implications and challenges she encountered in conducting her research,\u201d Jiwani says. \u201cIntersectional approaches are highly challenging, but the candidate successfully highlighted the complex dynamics that shape the experiences of racialized women online activists.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nasreen currently works in the Government of Canada as an Inclusive Design expert, while continuing her advocacy work around anti-violence. She provides advice and recommendations to local ending violence organizations about BIWOC (Black, Indigenous, and Women of Colour) experiences, perspectives, and needs relating to ending violence. She also sits on the advisory committee of the national Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) on their technology-facilitated violence project.<\/span><span
