She was plunged into epidemic reporting during the SARS outbreak of 2003. Since then, she has written about bird flu, the H1N1 flu pandemic, Ebola, Zika, polio, measles and of course, COVID-19. She joined STAT in 2015 and now leads its coverage of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen Branswell\u2019s body of work exemplifies the important role that journalists played in helping us to better understand the pandemic and to navigate one of the most serious public health crises in generations,\u2019\u2019 said Allan Thompson, the head of Carleton\u2019s journalism program. \u201cHelen should be classified among the first-responders who have helped us all to get through this crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Everts, Carleton\u2019s CTV Chair in Digital Science Journalism, echoed Thompson\u2019s sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen Branswell is an absolutely extraordinary journalist. She was one of the first to see COVID-19 for what it was: Back on New Year&#8217;s Eve 2019, she presciently worried on Twitter that the \u201cunexplained pneumonias in China\u201d were giving her \u2018SARS flashbacks,\u2019\u201d Everts said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m utterly delighted that Carleton has the honour of counting her among our alumni.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carleton confers honorary degrees as a way to convey to the world it\u2019s values and principles by recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of exceptional individuals. Branswell was awarded a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) \u2013 a degree awarded for outstanding service to the University or to the community as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Greenberg, Director for Carleton\u2019s School of Journalism and Communication, submitted a nomination letter for Branswell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Branswell is among the most influential health, medical and science journalists in the world and is highly worthy of this recognition,\u201d Greenberg said. \u201cShe has been a consistent source of reliable, evidence-based reporting about the COVID-19 pandemic for more than two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18465 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-400x484.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-400x484.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-1400x1693.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-300x363.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-768x929.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-1270x1536.jpg 1270w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-1694x2048.jpg 1694w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Branswell-700x846.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Branswell is no stranger to awards. She was the recipient of the AHCJ Award for Beat Reporting in 2018. In 2020, she won the George Polk Award for Public Service and was named a Pulitzer finalist for her coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.
