The funds have been established to support a variety of journalism projects in areas such as social justice, science and in-depth reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Made possible by the generous support of multiple donors, the Emerging Reporter Funds will allow Journalism students at the undergraduate and graduate levels to gain the professional experience needed to produce meaningful journalism work without the financial burden often involved in pursuing this type of focused, intensive reporting.<\/p>\n<p>The funds are valued between $1,200 and $6,500 and are being offered through The Future of Journalism Initiative (FJI) \u2013 a collaborative research hub at Carleton where journalists, academics and students work together and independently on innovative research projects that further the collective knowledge and understanding of journalism practice.<\/p>\n<p>The eight Emerging Reporter Funds available to students are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leonard Shifrin and Louise Dulude Canadian Social Policy Emerging Reporter<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Fund\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 valued at $6,500<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shireen Abu Akleh Emerging Reporter Fund in Social Justice Journalism\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 valued at $5,000<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Peter Mansbridge Emerging Reporter Fund<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 valued at $4,000<\/li>\n<li><strong>Susan Cardinal Emerging Reporter Fund<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 valued at $2,500<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bell Media Future of Journalism Initiative Emerging Reporting Fund<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 valued at $1,300<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lydia Dotto Emerging Reporter\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 valued at $1,200<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Peter Leo Emerging Reporter Fund<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 valued at $5,000<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emerging Reporter Fund on Resettlement in Canada<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 valued at $5,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The deadline for applications for Emerging Reporter Funds is April 2. Applications are due on April 19 and the detailed application kit will go live next week.<\/p>\n<p>This two-month, paid internship can be taken up this spring or summer with CBC North. This year\u2019s placement will be in Iqaluit, Whitehorse or Yellowknife. The location will be determined before we begin to take applications. \u00a0And the intern chosen for the position will also receive support for travel and living costs from a donor fund, named in honour of long-time Carleton professor Mary McGuire, to support student travel assist with accommodation during the student\u2019s internship.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the application, in addition to providing information about themselves and a statement of intent explaining why they would be a good candidate, applicants will also be asked to submit a detailed story pitch that they think would be of interest to CBC North. The pay will be $20 per hour, for a total of $5,600 for each eight-week placement. Two of the positions will be from from mid-May to mid-July and the other two will run from mid-June to mid-August.<\/p>\n<p>Successful applicants will produce content for the school\u2019s flagship digital publication, Capital Current, including its social media streams. Successful applicants will employ a range of digital reporting tools to cover news as it unfolds. Applicants chosen for the June-August positions will also be involved with with the delivery of a Podcast Journalism Summer Camp program, to be offered the week of Aug. 12-16.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Research Assistants for Carleton roundtable on Journalism and Artificial Intelligence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Carleton\u2019s journalism program, in partnership with the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), the Globe and Mail and the Polis\/LSE JournalismAI Project, will be hosting an industry roundtable on journalism and artificial intelligence. The one-day event will be held on Thursday, May 30, at the Globe and Mail newsroom in Toronto. A number of journalism students at the master\u2019s and undergraduate level will be hired to support the event and generate media content that will be shared in real time on our digital platform and by creating an annotated bibliography on journalism and AI.<\/p>\n<p>Seizing upon the active discussion about the impact of AI during what most regard as an ongoing crisis in the journalism industry, the main goal of project is to identify the risks and possibilities presented by artificial intelligence tools, how those tools are already shaping journalism and how best and most ethically to absorb and apply the lessons learned both within news organizations and in the journalism classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Full details of the event and how to register are still being finalized and will be posted
