{"id":21502,"date":"2024-05-31T12:14:59","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T16:14:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/?p=21502"},"modified":"2024-05-31T12:15:18","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T16:15:18","slug":"carleton-journalism-students-stories-about-indigenous-communities-published-in-the-globe-and-mail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2024\/carleton-journalism-students-stories-about-indigenous-communities-published-in-the-globe-and-mail\/","title":{"rendered":"Carleton Journalism students&#8217; stories about Indigenous communities published in The Globe and Mail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two student reporting teams from Carleton Journalism&#8217;s Reporting in Indigenous Communities course will have their work published in The Globe and Mail as part of the newspaper&#8217;s Indigenous Enterprises series.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/small-business\/article-while-waiting-for-land-back-pikwakanagan-first-nation-is-opting-to-buy\/\">The first article was published yesterday<\/a>, and highlights an initiative being undertaken by the Pikw\u00e0kanag\u00e0n First Nation to buy back off-reserve land as an economic development vehicle. The second article, which centres on the Akwesasne Nation, will be published June 13th.<\/p>\n<p>Taught by <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/mccue-duncan\/\">Professor Duncan McCue<\/a>, the fourth year course <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/mccue-reporting-in-indigenous-communities\/\">launched in the Winter 2024 term<\/a> and uses a flipped classroom model. Students travel to local Indigenous communities before coming back to class with a story that ties to a central theme. The Winter 2024 cohort focused on stories of Indigenous economy. McCue <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2023\/duncan-mccue-joins-carletons-journalism-program-full-time-to-create-more-indigenous-storytelling\/\">joined Carleton&#8217;s School of Journalism and Communication in early 2023<\/a> after teaching at Toronto Metropolitan University and the UBC Graduate School of Journalism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcurrent.ca\/indigenous-communities\/\">More information about the Reporting in Indigenous Communities course, as well as all the stories developed by its students, can be found on the course website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two student reporting teams from Carleton Journalism&#8217;s Reporting in Indigenous Communities course will have their work published in The Globe and Mail as part of the newspaper&#8217;s Indigenous Enterprises series.
