{"id":22245,"date":"2024-11-28T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T14:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/?p=22245"},"modified":"2024-11-28T14:35:19","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T19:35:19","slug":"shadd-cary-lecture-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2024\/shadd-cary-lecture-announcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Carleton journalism launches fundraiser to build new Mary Ann Shadd Cary Lecture Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada\u2019s first journalism program is launching its first-ever lecture series named for a woman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shaddcarycentre.com\/lecture-series\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual Mary Ann Shadd Cary Lecture Series: Voices of Change in Canadian Journalism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will feature leading women and non-binary journalists from historically under- and mis-represented communities, who will share their stories and expertise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-bttn u-text-transform-u u-text-align-c\"><a class=\"c-bttn__link\" href=\"https:\/\/futurefunder.carleton.ca\/campaigns\/the-annual-mary-ann-shadd-cary-lecture-series-voices-of-change-in-canadian-journalism\/\">DONATE NOW<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCarleton\u2019s first journalism class took place in October 1945. The first Mary Ann Shadd Cary Lecture is scheduled to take place 80 years later, in October 2025,\u201d Trish Audette-Longo, an assistant professor in the journalism program, said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is an opportunity to celebrate and centre women and non-binary journalists\u2019 work, and to give students in our undergraduate and graduate programs opportunities to meet some of their heroes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lecture series is named for Mary Ann Shadd Cary, the first Black woman publisher in North America and the first woman publisher in Canada. In 1853, Shadd Cary founded <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Provincial Freeman.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMary Ann was known for her impressive lectures, and for speaking the truth to audiences who sought change, but didn\u2019t always understand her because she was an outspoken woman,\u201d said Nana aba Duncan, the Carty Chair in Journalism, Diversity, and Inclusion Studies and the founder of the Mary Ann Shadd Cary Centre for Journalism and Belonging at Carleton University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has been my mission to make sure our industry recognizes and honours her legacy in journalism. Launching a lecture in her name \u2013 at Canada\u2019s oldest journalism institution \u2013 is the perfect way to do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22285\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/maryannshadd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"166\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadd Cary\u2019s pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to supporting and advancing Black communities, education, and women\u2019s rights through journalism laid the foundation for a more inclusive and just society. Her example will guide the selection of invited speakers, who will deliver public lectures at Carleton University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mary Ann Shadd Cary Lecture Series will be a cornerstone initiative led by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shaddcarycentre.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Ann Shadd Cary Centre for Journalism and Belonging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and journalism faculty in Carleton University\u2019s School of Journalism and Communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new lecture joins a pair of long-standing annual series in the school. The annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism\/special-events\/kesterton-lecture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kesterton Lecture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is named for Wilfred Kesterton, one of the journalism school\u2019s first graduates and faculty members.
