{"id":7577,"date":"2018-01-09T16:44:32","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T21:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/?p=7577"},"modified":"2018-01-09T16:44:32","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T21:44:32","slug":"graduate-students-win-three-major-external-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2018\/graduate-students-win-three-major-external-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate students win three major external awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three graduate students in the Communication and Media Studies program have recently been named recipients of some highly competitive externally-funded donor awards at Carleton.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7580\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7580\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7580 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/LianeChiblowImage-300x432.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/LianeChiblowImage-300x432.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/LianeChiblowImage-400x575.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/LianeChiblowImage-768x1105.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/LianeChiblowImage-1400x2014.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/LianeChiblowImage-700x1007.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/LianeChiblowImage.jpg 1390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liane Chiblow, MA Student<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In December, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/chiblow-liane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liane Chiblow<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/capurro-gabriela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gabriela Capurro<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/berard-bethany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bethany Berard<\/a> all received the good news that they had won funding to support their research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very pleased to have the university recognize the brilliance, dedication, and creativity of our students, and especially gratified that the diversity of our students&#8217; research and experience was recognized through these awards,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/russill-chris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Russill<\/a>, Associate Professor and Graduate Supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>Liane Chiblow, a first-year Master\u2019s student, won the New Sun Graduate Bursary. This bursary is awarded annually to First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis students at the graduate level who are studying in fields such as Indigenous governance, public administration, social work, architecture and environmental studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out I won just before the Christmas break,\u201d said Chiblow. \u201cI didn&#8217;t think I had any chances of winning this award and I was completely over the moon when I found out I was the successful candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chiblow\u2019s research explores traditional oral storytelling as an important part of Indigenous history, culture and ways of life. Through examining creation stories and Anishinaabeg storytelling, her research aims to explore the multilevel bodies of theory as they relate to communication, decolonization and Indigenous resurgence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a single mother, this award represents not only my achievements in academia but also in the ability to balance work, school and personal life,\u201d said Chiblow. \u201cI\u2019m so incredibly honored to be chosen for the New Sun Graduate Award and will continue to infiltrate my Anishinaabe experiences and knowledge throughout my graduate research.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7579\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7579\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7579 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capurro-pic-1-e1515533938812-300x453.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capurro-pic-1-e1515533938812-300x453.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capurro-pic-1-e1515533938812-400x604.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capurro-pic-1-e1515533938812-768x1159.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capurro-pic-1-e1515533938812-700x1057.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capurro-pic-1-e1515533938812.jpg 1325w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gabriela Capurro, PhD Candidate<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gabriela Capurro, a PhD candidate, won the Hamlin Graduate Fellowship, awarded to outstanding students entering or proceeding from one year to another in any graduate program of study at Carleton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know these awards are very competitive and just being nominated to it was an honor,\u201d said Capurro. \u201cHaving this fellowship is incredibly rewarding and I feel encouraged to keep working hard (and enjoying doing what I do!). It will also allow me to pay for some of the travel costs for my dissertation research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Capurro submitted her dissertation proposal in December and is now waiting to defend it. She will then begin her research on the discursive construction of antibiotic resistance as a public health risk.<\/p>\n<p>Her work was also <a href=\"https:\/\/gradstudents.carleton.ca\/2017\/grad-research-superbugs-outbreak-narrative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently featured in an article<\/a> on the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs website.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7578\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7578\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7578 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/wp-content\/uploads\/BethanyBerard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"404\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bethany Berard, PhD Candidate<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bethany Berard, a PhD candidate, won a David and Rachel Epstein Scholarship, an award that identifies and supports outstanding graduate students at Carleton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out about the award at the end of the semester, right before the break. It was great news to get at the end of a busy semester, and I was incredibly humbled to receive it,\u201d said Berard. \u201cReceiving this award means that Carleton values some of the same things I do, particularly academic citizenship and investing in one\u2019s academic community. With respect to my work, this award makes some of my more ambitious research plans plausible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berard\u2019s research looks at how visual technologies influence society, politics, and social norms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am currently working on a trio of projects that look at how we discuss photography in terms of trust and truth,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe first discusses what photographs we trust and why using humanist and post-humanist logics; the second looks at how individuals, institutions, and instruments come to stand in for why a photograph is argued to be true or not; and the third project is an assessment of the ubiquity of \u2018filters\u2019 in online photography which has changed how we understand photos.
