Liam Cole Young, Instructor I<\/p><\/div>\n

Dr. Liam Cole Young<\/a> has been invited to spend the summer in Weimar, Germany, as a Research Fellow at the International Research Institute for Cultural Technologies and Media Philosophy<\/a> (IKKM) at the Bauhaus University Weimar.<\/p>\n

The IKKM is a hub of cutting-edge, collaborative research on media theory and histories of technology. Each term, up to ten outstanding scholars from around the world gather in Weimar to develop, in joint discussion and coordinated work, new connections between theories of Cultural Techniques and Media Philosophy.<\/p>\n

Dr. Young will join other summer fellows Lisa Parks (MIT), John Durham Peters (Yale), Steven Connor (Cambridge), Stefanie Diekmann (Hildesheim), Elie During (Paris Ouest \u2013 Nanterre), and Claudia Tittel (Bauhaus Weimar).<\/p>\n

While in Weimar, Dr. Young will conduct research into the history of salt as a staple good and \u201celemental\u201d medium that has, for thousands of years, processed organic material for storage and transportation and thus mediated economic and social relations. The project is the latest phase of Dr. Young\u2019s ongoing critical reassessment of Harold Innis\u2019s early economic histories, which he is conducting with an eye to understanding their importance to the emergence of media and communication studies in Canada.<\/p>\n
