In the early summer term 2020 (May 4 – June 16) SLaLS will be offering LING 4009/5009, a Special Topics course on Constraint-Based Syntax, taught by Prof. Ash Asudeh.

LING 4009 A/5009 S Special Topic in Linguistics: Constraint-Based Syntax
Constraint-based syntax understands syntactic well-formedness in terms of general constraints on syntactic structures (a well-formed structure obeys all relevant constraints), in contrast to theories that posit syntactic derivations, such as transformations, movement, or Internal Merge. The first part of the course looks at the historical context from the late 60s to the late 70s that gave rise to constraint-based theories of syntax. The second, main part of the course introduces the constraint-based framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar in detail. The last part of the course briefly introduces two other constraint-based frameworks, Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar and Optimality-Theoretic Syntax. This course assumes some knowledge of general syntactic theory, but no prior knowledge of constraint-based syntax.
- Prerequisite: LING 3004 Syntax I or permission of the Instructor
- Instructor: Ash Asudeh
The current schedule is Mondays and Wednesdays at 11:35-14:25. This course may attract non-Carleton students, some of whom may be from outside Ottawa. These students, and some of you, may prefer to attend class just one day a week for 6 hours, instead of twice a week for 3 hours each time.
We are proposing to change the schedule so that class would meet just once per week, on a Monday or a Friday from 10:00 to 17:30 with a break from 13:00 – 14:30. We are seeking your input as we consider making this change to the schedule.
