Environmental discourse in society: Implications for foreign/additional language education

Vera Lúcia Lopes Cristovão, Brazil
(Londrina State University)

Environmental issues like climate change and global warming have taken up increasing space and attention in different domains of our society, including governmental, legal, journalistic, academic, scientific, cultural, and religious spheres. Communication within these diverse discursive domains has a relevant role for the construction of representations about environmental issues as well as for the orientation of strategic proposals and actions for how to deal with such problems. Therefore, the role of verbal and non verbal language that constitute texts which are produced, distributed, and consumed in such spheres is crucial. This work aims at investigating discourses about the environment in different social spheres, with an emphasis on one case study of Brazilian journalism, and the implications for foreign/additional language learning.

Vera is an associate professor at Londrina State University (UEL), a member of the Language Studies Post-graduation Program at UEL, the leader of the research group called Language and Education, and a researcher in the area of Applied Linguistics for the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Her research interests include genre, teacher education, writing studies, environmental discourse, and textbook analysis.
